Ludeke: New laws crystal clear

Johannesburg - Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke believes the way the new variations of the laws will blown by referees this weekend is “crystal clear” and that there is no uncertainty among teams as to what to expect ahead of this weekend’s opening round of the Vodacom Super 14.

Ludeke heads into Friday’s opener against the Vodacom Cheetahs with a healthy dose of confidence after his injured party of Francois Hougaard, Wynand Olivier, Pierre Spies and Danie Rossouw were all given the green light to play on Friday.

The return of the quartet gives the Bulls a lot of continuity, and they are likely to name a near full-strength side today, and as close a side to the one that won the Absa Currie Cup at the end of last season.

“We’re positive that we can have all the guys back for this game, they’re vital to the way we want to play. With the exception of one or two players, we’re where we ended at the end of last year. We have established combinations over the past few years and everyone came through unscathed on Monday’s practice – that’s a massive positive for us,” Ludeke told Supersport.com

But Ludeke will spend the last few days refining the Bulls adaptation to the new laws, and believes that referees have finally made it clear the way they want the game to be played, and that varying interpretations are a thing of the past.

“The nice thing about a first game like this where nobody knows what to expect and what they’re up against is that the team that takes the initiative first in the game will be rewarded.

“With the new laws you need to adapt at the scrums, at the breakdown and with the kicks. There will be penalties but you need to play smart, to ensure that those penalties go your way.

“We’ve looked at a number of the pre-season games, including our own, and I don’t think you will get unpredictability.

“We’ve seen on defence in the ruck, you have to stay out. Referees want “daylight” and it is very clear that they will blow it that way. Every referee has blown it the same so far, nobody has had a different interpretation of the breakdown.

“The same with the scrum, we know you have to use your own weight, not put your arm on the ground or collapse. That has been clearly defined by the referees.

“The third one is the kick freeze; we know what to do there. There isn’t uncertainty about how they will blow it this year. We looked at a number of games and those three things were clear. If you do it wrong you will get penalised

“All the players know that penalties will come easier, so they need to be more focussed. If they need to adjust, then they must adjust. There are no grey areas surrounding the new laws.”

The Bulls are likely to give Pedrie Wannenburg another chance to continue his rugby revival, while Hougaard will slot in on the wing, Olivier at centre and Spies in his customary No8 role. Danie Rossouw seems likely to fill Bakkies Botha’s place in the engine room alongside captain Victor Matfield.

Possible Bulls team: Zane Kirchner, Gerhard van den Heever, Jaco Pretorius, Wynand Olivier, Francois Hougaard, Morné Steyn, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies, Pedrie Wannenburg, Deon Stegmann, Victor Matfield, Danie Rossouw, Werner Kruger, Gary Botha, Gurthrö Steenkamp.

Is it just me, or is this thread not a pleasure to read and comment on today. So far we have been able to comment on rugby, not only that, it was in relevance to the article and the team involved, but then it’s not surprising, look at the names of the contributors, then think of the ones that have not.

Oh F#%, where was I looking!! Thanks Pieter, that would have been a disaster of biblical proportions if I had missed that. Okay after Friday we will know.

@GTR. I am with you, John Smit is no longer a prop and has not been so for some time. So if he is to play it has to be hooker. Great sides need a great leader, but the game also starts in the front row. I do not envy anyone having to make the JS decision. Unfortunately I think the decision needs to be made sooner rather than later. If he goes, who takes the arm band? Victor is the name that comes to mind. But I think we need someone that has more rugby years left in him.

@hardi: If u wait till Saturday u are going to miss the game, the game is on Friday, so by Friday u should know or are u waiting for the Saturday newspapers??

After Saturday we will know how our season is going to go, The Cheetahs will test us on all fronts and will in my opinion be a good barometer.

@ Sheldon... Liebenberg is an excellent choice. But they should rather play John Smit at no 2, with a proven no3. Otherwise, if you wanna play Liebenberg, please play him with a proven no3. JS isn't coping there, but he has a good track record as hooker/captain. Sorry, this may seem disrespectfull towards one of the greatest leaders in a Bok jersey, but if he's not the first choice in his position, can we afford to have him in the team?

I'm not worried about our SA refs way of blowing, but is the AUS and NZ refs going to blow all the games the same or will they like always blow the SA teams on every technicallity and the AUS and NZ teams get away with it again? We will have to wait and see...must say, the Bulls team is looking good, don't think they have to be too worried about the Cheetahs game...

Watch how Gary Botha makes a difference in the engine room!!
Sheldon2/9/2010 12:51 PM
@GTR. Agree , all teams should be worried about the Cheetahs front row though. Best 2 props in the country. I think they should be starting with Liebenberg instead of Bizzie at hooker for the Boks, but i highly doubt you will agree on that last bit.

EEEEIINAAA, WAT N GREAT SPAN.

I'm a bit worried about that Cheetah's scrum... That's one place where they can really hurt the Bulls.
Megabull2/9/2010 11:06 AM
If that is the team we can do something good. Go BULLLLLLLLLS!!!!
