Johannesburg – Lions captain Cobus Grobbelaar and caretaker skipper Jaque Fourie will not recover in time from their injuries to play the Reds in a Super14 clash in Brisbane.
Grobbelaar’s tour is over and he will return to South Africa on Thursday. Fourie got an accidental finger in his eye from a Blues player last week and he will not be in the Lions’ 22-man squad.
There is no leadership void because a former skipper in Ernst Joubert will take the reins. Grobbelaar will be out for about a month with his ankle injury.
“It’s a big setback for me. I just hope the players can take their opportunities in the last two games on tour,” Grobbelaar said on Wednesday.
He is not happy with the diagnosis he received in Australia that he will have to rest his ankle for between four and six weeks.
“I will consult a specialist in South Africa. I want a third opinion,” he said.
With Grobbelaar on his way back home, the Lions will take on the Reds on Saturday with the same loose-trio that played against the Blues.
Grobbelaar was missed as a fetching flank against the Blues. With Daniel Braid in the Reds’ set-up, the Lions will again be under pressure.
“He is a classic openside flank and a very good player, who was rated highly by the Blues when he still played for them,” Grobbelaar said of Braid.
He believes his team-mates will give a good account of themselves in the remaining tour games against the Reds and Western Force.
“If you look at the Super14 log, it appears as if the last two games should be easier than the first two (Chiefs and Blues).
“We have not targeted certain games. The Reds are a tough team to counter if you give them space. They showed against the Sharks what they are capable of,” said Grobbelaar.
Coach Eugene Eloff is naming his side on Thursday. It is expected that lock Jannes Labuschagne and inside centre Doppies la Grange will be back in their positions.
Deon van Rensburg, who played well at inside centre last week, is expected to play outside centre in Fourie’s place.
