Lions wait on injured duo

Liam del Carme - Beeld

Johannesburg – The Lions are hoping flank Cobus Grobbelaar and centre Jaque Fourie will be fit for Friday’s clash against the Crusaders in Johannesburg.

“Jaque and Baywatch (Grobbelaar) should both be fit,” said Lions coach Eugene Eloff, who is keen for his side to bury the ghost of Friday’s fiasco against the Western Force in Perth.

Both players had their tour of Australia and New Zealand cut short with injuries – Fourie with an eye and Grobbelaar with a groin.

However, they are not the only players that will be keeping the Lions medical staff busy this week.

Fullback Louis Ludik also had to leave the tour injured, while scrumhalf Jano Vermaak and wing Henno Mentz were injured in the last game against the Force.

“I should know by Monday whether Louis will be fit, while Henno is doubtful with a leg injury. Jano should be fine,” said Eloff.

Eloff conceded that the players were not up to the task against the Force.

“It was basically our 'B' team. I could not really pick a different side. I had to give Willie Wepener a rest. My choices were limited with so many injuries,” Eloff said of his team’s 55-14 defeat.

“The guys were tired. Make no mistake, the first three games on tour were very physical,” said Eloff.

He expects the Crusaders to be tougher as a result of their unexpected defeat to the Cheetahs.

“The Cheetahs defended very well and I think they will be sharper against us,” said Eloff.
