Lions prop gets one match ban

Johannesburg -  Lions prop Heinke van der Merwe has been suspended for one match following a SANZAR judicial hearing in Johannesburg.

He was found guilty for a dangerous tackle during the Super 14 match between the Lions and the Sharks in Durban on Saturday.

The judicial officer found Van der Merwe guilty of lifting Sharks centre Francois Steyn beyond the horizontal and making no attempt to lower him safely back to ground on the 76th minute of the match.

Lions replacement centre Jannie Boshoff was cleared of the same charge in the incident.

Van der Merwe has lodged an appeal against the suspension but a date has yet to be set.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
