Great expectations for Bulls

JJ Harmse

Pretoria – It was no coincidence that people were queuing at the Loftus Versfeld ticket office on Monday.

Yes, the Bulls may be playing the Sharks on Saturday, but no Bulls supporter will be prepared to stand in the cold and rain if there aren’t massive expectations attached to their team.

And there is good reason for the Loftus faithful to be excited. The Bulls are leading the Super 14 log and things are looking good after their brilliant last 30 minutes against the Lions at the weekend.

Bakkies Botha completed Monday morning’s training session without problems and did not experience any problems in the wake of his recovery from an injured heel in spite of the heavy field.

That can only mean that Botha is ready to take on the Sharks.

There should be more clarity on Tuesday as to whether the lock is ready to start or whether he will be used as a substitute.

In previous years, Botha would return in the starting line-up and play as long as his legs allowed. Last season it was an unexpected 50 minutes.

It can be expected, therefore, that Bulls coach Frans Ludeke will follow this route again.

Fourie du Preez will return as scrumhalf.
