Du Preez off to Japan

Off to Japan (Gallo)

Johannesburg - Bulls scrumhalf, Fourie du Preez, on Wednesday extended his contract with the union till the conclusion of the Super 15 competition in 2011.

Du Preez, who turns 28 next week, also signed his Springbok contract that will keep him in Green and Gold till the end of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in 2011.

He will then join a club side in Japan.

Du Preez, who made his debut for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in 2001 and for the Vodacom Bulls in 2003, wants to end his successful relationship with the Bulls on a high.

"These were the best rugby years of my life and I could never have played for another union. By revealing my plans for the future now, it will give the Bulls sufficient time to plan for the future and possible successors. There is already some excellent players like Francois Hougaard knocking on the door, so it is time to move on," Du Preez said.

"I was happy to be involved with the Bulls during arguably the best era they have ever had. It remains a massive honour to be part of the structures started and maintained by world class coaches such as Heyneke Meyer and Frans Ludeke. "The leadership of Victor Matfield and the bond between the team members are also things I will always treasure. There is still time for me to add value and it is something I look forward to."

With regards to the national side, Du Preez indicated that the joy he had playing for the Springboks in 2009 made it easy to commit himself to the national cause till after the World Cup.

"There is the chance to play in another World Cup, but also the knowledge that I will enjoy the experience. Last season was the most enjoyable I have had in the Bok jersey and I think Peter de Villiers deserve a lot of credit for that. I feel we have the experience and core group in the team to make a serious run at the Webb Ellis trophy again," Du Preez said.

His decision to play in Japan was equally easy to make, he said.

"After 11 years at the Bulls, I am affording myself the opportunity to change the scenery and to expose myself to a different culture. This contract will allow me that," Du Preez said.

"I think I can learn a lot and broaden my horizons in the game at the same time, which will help should I opt for a career in coaching later on in my life."

Ludeke indicated that Du Preez's decision will leave them with enough time to start a succession plan.

"Again Fourie did not only act in his own interests, but thought of the team as well. As one of the architects of the success the Bulls enjoyed in recent years, his input in our planning will be highly valued and it is nice to know he will be around for a while still. I know he had many offers and options, but he again showed his commitment to the Bulls.

Ludeke said investment in possible replacements will start soon.

"Fourie is a student of the game and will help in the process to indentify and bring the right successors through," Ludeke said.

Fourie du Preez facts:

Vodacom Blue Bulls (debut, 2001 vs Leopards). 51 matches, 100 points.

Vodacom Bulls (debut, 2003 vs Brumbies). 89 matches, 90 points.

South Africa (debut, 2004 vs Ireland). 55 Tests, 65 points.

I think that his responsible announcement ahead of time is a wonderful gesture that shows him being a great guy. Furthermore his move to Japan is good because he cannot continue in this top form forever, and it will probably ensure his financial security with less pressure on his body.

@ Gtr...your 4:22 comment is very insightful...and yes I'll admit the reason i enjoyed FdP get 'smoked' by Schalk is because as a loose forward I wasn't quick enough to get my hands on those frustrating scrummies...so i'll live my dream through others...any amens out there?
Gtr3/18/2010 4:22 PM
@ @Gtr: ja, right now they maybe 'average', but if you take a look at some of our 'stars' like Matfield, Bakkies, Olivier and Spies... Olivier played in Ettiene Botha's shadow for a few years. They didn't arrive at the Bulls the full package they are today. Morne Steyn is another good example. Two or three years ago Derrick Hougaardt was our first choice, with Morne getting a lot less game time. Right now, hate him or diss him like you want to, he is the best flyhalf in SA. Not because the guys better than him stopped playing, but because he developed into a much better player. A lot is said about Nick Koster, Lambie, Lionel Cronje, the Ebersohns, Lionel Mapoe and WP Nel to become future Boks, which I aggree to, but check those player I have mentioned... They could be in the squad that plays in the 2015 WC. And if you haven't noticed, Van Der Merwe have already had a few good games in the S14... To be successfull for one year, you just need to buy a Bok team... But that won't work for the next ten years. Chance favors the prepared mind. We know our stars may stop next year, that's why the Bulls, or any team for that matter, need to have systems in place to develop the next star players. Do you remember when Jean De Villiers still played wing for the Stormers, because you had De Wet Barry and Maruis Joubert? And right now, most Boks fans will aggree that JF and JdV is the best centre combination in the world.
Bulla3/18/2010 3:12 PM
Fourie du Preez, ...simply the best..!! ...just like the Bulls..!!
Gtr3/18/2010 2:46 PM
@rob... he could get up, afterwards, and joke about the incident. I suppose some of those tackles are awesome to see, but the player getting tackled is not so lucky... It was a good tackle tho, like the one Bakkies got on Berrick Barnes in one of the SA vs Aus tests. Personally, I like it better when the Bulls perform tackles like that. That's if they haven't forgotten how to tackle. But I clearly get what you are saying... just a bit of banter, hope it's ok?
@Gtr3/18/2010 2:31 PM
You calling out names but I dont see any superstars and thats going to be the problem, u will just be a ave team!
rob3/18/2010 2:12 PM
@Gtr...no I'm quite sure you know what I meant "THE FACT THAT HE GOT HAMMERED" was the highlight for me
Gtr3/18/2010 1:37 PM
@ rob, was the tackle the hi-lite, or the fact that FdP got up from it? Juan Smith also tackle him like that in this year's S14 match, and he got up again. For the Aussies, it must have been when Matt Gitua took him out in the air? And he got up again. Those were my hi-lites: That he got up everytime. Forget Schalk, FdP is a tough player! YEAH!
@@Nic3/18/2010 1:08 PM
Maybe true about ZB...personally still rate FDP ahead of him but thats because perhaps I didn't have as much of an appreciation/understanding of the game back then...every time I watch FDP he still seems to be improving, impressive considering he has achieved everything in Rugby! Now a move to Japan is great just to mix things up a bit!
rob3/18/2010 1:00 PM
highlight of Fourie's career for me...'that tackle' last season when Schalk absolutely flattened him...YEAH

The best Rugby Player in the World at the moment !!!!!
@Nic3/18/2010 12:23 PM
Zinzan Brooke is the most complete rugbyplayer to walk this earth, he could do everything-even moer and intimidate oposition-as Mark Andrews.
nic3/18/2010 11:38 AM
In my Rugby watching life of about 20 years now I have not seen a more complete player. He does all the basics of a scrum half as well as any other I have seen and combine this with his incredible positional play (attack or defense). He will be in the thick of things around ruck time in the opponents 22 but if the opposing team turns the ball over he is somehow back in his own 22 to receive the kick. Unbelievable skill and does the work of 2 players a lot of the time. And as mentioned, a great ambassador for the sport! A living legend in world rugby!
Juan3/18/2010 11:18 AM
Rugby is a k@k sport!!
kudu3/18/2010 11:05 AM
Gtr3/18/2010 10:59 AM
@ ryan: I won't be too sure of that... The Bulls already started building for 2011 way back in 2007... Hougaardt, Van De Heever, Van Der Merwe, Steenkamp (on loan to the Sharks), Stegman, Potgieter, Dippenaar...
scipio3/18/2010 10:50 AM
Omg, You are all so clueless about rugby!!! Pay attention now idiots. Firstly Mcaw did win the 2009 IRB player of the year (he was injured for half the year!!). Everyone thought it would be between Fourie and Brian. Just shows you the corruption in the IRB. Secondly, Fourie mentioned that he and Heini Adams are busy ending their careers. That's why he mentioned Hougaard as his successor! Heini aint a young bloke no more, By 2011 Hougaard would take over the no9 position. So seriously. Before you idiots post on here get some brains first.
the real cj3/18/2010 10:34 AM
@white rhino. Joost was never any better than mediocre. Watch the games again and you'll see his passing was the worst of any Southern hemisphere team. Despite a very talented group of number 9's in SA and around the world Fourie would be every coaches first pick!
Christiaan3/18/2010 10:22 AM
white rhino3/18/2010 9:59 AM
Sorry to say to all you losers complaining about fourie. If you knew anything about rugby you would know that he is ranked no 1 scrumhalf in the worldin 2008,2009 and it wil bein 2010. Not because he is a blue bull player but because he is flippen good and he learned from the best there ever was JOOST
Johan3/18/2010 9:43 AM
There are a few Bulls players that no one, regardless who you support or if you like the Bulls or not, can deny the talent and contributions made over the last 5 - 10 years in SA rugby, Fourie du Preez, Spies, Matfield, Bakkies, Habana and lately Morne - wish they played for the Stormers but we could only get our hands on Habana
ryan3/18/2010 9:30 AM
And so the year of the Bull will end in 2011, all the BB has beens will look for greener pastures and Frans Ludeke will have to get the tjekbook out of the safe and dust it off! Mapoe is already on the list!
Andre V3/18/2010 9:20 AM
He will not be missed. the Bulls being the super union that they are will find a replacement of same skill or even better. Have we missed Habana-No. dont forget the fact that Fourie was the successor to Joost. As i will always regard him as a wonderful player the age thing is a factor and good on him for milking the talent while he can. Until he goes we will respect and value him.
Warwick Gibson3/18/2010 9:18 AM
An absolute master and gentleman. Never loses his focus while playing. A humble player who will be missed. He should be used as an example of how a scrumhalf should play the game. Mike you are a bit dozy.
Stormer3/18/2010 8:56 AM
This guy is pure genius. He is the pivot around which the whole game at the Boks and Bulls rotates. His brilliance has covered up our lack of talent at flyhalf. I shudder to think what will happen if he is no longer there. Morne Steyn is good, but Fourie du Preez makes him look world class. Here's hoping that we will soon unearth another rugby brain like his, because the combined brainpower of Hougaard, Pienaar and Duvenhage is not a patch on this bloke. The closest thing to him at the moment is Janno Vermaak. All the best to you Fourie and I am looking forward to enjoying your unrivalled talent for the next two years - even though it is to the detriment of my team, the Stormers!
Nikki3/18/2010 8:43 AM
@ Mike & Sal Nie Maak nie.......From which planet our you okes? Clearly the one where they have never heard of a game called rugby. Although I do feel for Ruan & I still am a fan...he was unfortunate to have played in the same position at the same time as Fourie who overshadowed him by a mile. You supposed "experts": ask ANY rugby playing professional in the WORLD who they would ideally want as their scrumhalf. Let's be dead honest here boys: At least 80% of them if not higher will tell you Fourie Du Preez...so please THINK next time you comment or please don't comment at all! Dodos!
BlouLouw3/18/2010 8:40 AM
Jeremy3/18/2010 8:38 AM
Mike??? O sorry, Mike is Juliass's nick-name. Boogeyman is 100% correct. Even a blind man can tell you Fourie must the 1 of the best rugby-players SA ever had. In his off-games he still looks better that the rest. Look how he took that tackle from Burger the other day. As a hardcore Stormer supporter, I bow before that man. Don't know how the BB can be so lucky to always got great scrumhalves??
Morné (..) - @Mike@sal nie maak.3/18/2010 8:35 AM
Roy3/18/2010 8:13 AM
Brilliant rugby player.......K@k scrumhalf though...see Mike's comments...
YsterBlouBlinkBal3/18/2010 8:09 AM
BULLS BO!!! FOURIE BO!!!!
Gustav3/18/2010 8:09 AM
I am not a Bull supporter, but what a rugby player. Go well, Fourie, jy's a GREAT scrummy!!!!
Neil3/18/2010 8:07 AM
Dear Mike. Rated best player by IRB, International counterparts, Springbok team mates, Blue Bulls team and a gazillion BB supporters...and you keep on wondering why. I personally dont like it when Tiger wins (for various reasons) but he still remains the best golfer in the world - whether I like it or not. Salute Fourie.
Marieta Joubert3/18/2010 7:59 AM
Anti bull3/18/2010 7:52 AM
I don't think he will be missed (only by the bb). He is not that great. threre are a lot of scrummies better than him. Besides it is only the bulls that rate this guy. @Sal nie maak - i think you've hit the nail on the head.
Haha3/18/2010 7:36 AM
enige iemand wat se Fourie Du Preez is over rated, weet absoluut niks van rugby, of is pissed off ruan pienaar sharkie supporters. Sucks to be you
Ha Ha3/18/2010 7:26 AM
going to experience another culture ???? I think its more like going to experience culture full stop!
dronkie3/18/2010 7:13 AM
He's over rated anyway - What about Heinie? Is he not the obvious choice, now he favours Hougaart for the position
Bullet 3/18/2010 6:35 AM
In the past when the Blue Bulls were doing badly, I supported them because they are a South African team. By the way I'm a Shark supporter and a very dissapointed one. What galls me is the attitude of the bulls supporters now that they are on a high. Their attitude to the other local teams is disgusting and many of the bulls supporters are now shouting for the Ausie & NZ teams only because they are on top now. To all blue bull supporters, guys lets support all our SA teams and drop the arrogant attitude, after all you were once at the bottom of the pile and you still had our support.
Jan Kirsten3/18/2010 6:05 AM
@Mike: And you played for which national team again? Or which provincial team? Or varsity team? Or club team? When did you qualify as a referee? Oh, your rugby pedigree is AWESOME! That, by the way, was sarcasm. You may sit down now.
Whindy3/18/2010 5:32 AM
Mike, you are obviously clueless or biased, I am no Blue Bull fan, but this guy is Brilliant, which ever way you look at it. Dont let your blinkered Eyes show your ignorance!!
Craig@Mike3/18/2010 5:23 AM
Hey Mike, I guess you're what one would commonly refer to as a "plonker". I suggest you take a look at the videos from the 2007 world cup and you figure out who was the anchor in the team and the one who dictated the play. I'm guessing you just posted that to be controversial - if not, you should probably stick to soccer or something else.
zim3/18/2010 5:05 AM
Great scrumhalf but it would have been better if he mentioned Heinie Adams, who is the current No 2 scrumhalve at the Bulls. I assume it will take a looooong time to change this type of mentality.
Chris du Plessis3/18/2010 4:36 AM
@ " Sal nie maak nie" Your mother should not have been allowed to breed...
NZkiwi3/18/2010 2:16 AM
A great servant of SA rugby, good luck in Japan. Best scrum half SA has ever had? I still think its Joost.
Blue Jake3/18/2010 1:34 AM
@Mike. Luckily your opinion doesn't count. Gary Botha het sy 2 jaar kontrak by Harlequins eerbiedig. Derick Hougaard is al 2 jaar in Engeland. Noem vir my een Bul wat oorsee was en nie sy kontrak eerbiedig het nie, kantgesig.
Legendary_duPreez3/18/2010 12:15 AM
We love you Fourie, always will! These were the best rugby years of our lives as well, thanks to you! Good hunting, General! You will be surely missed, for you are irreplaceable. Best scrum half to have ever walked this earth.
Mike3/17/2010 11:57 PM
The most over rated player I have ever seen. I am still wondering why he was called the BEST scrumhalf in the world for so long. HIS never even in his position and half the time he is at fly half while someone is waiting for the ball to be cleared behind the maul! He will not be missed! And once the next guy comes along you will see how average this guy was!
Willem3/17/2010 11:09 PM
A fantastic scrumhalf!
willem3/17/2010 10:54 PM
A fantastic scrumhalf! A pleasure to watch playing the game of rugby.
Fleckie3/17/2010 9:41 PM
Who's the next Bok scrummie from 2011 onwards ??? Its gotta b Dewaldt Duvenhage, He's only 21 now and has plenty caps for WP and the Stormers. Has a great kicking game and is alot quicker than Fourie is around the park. In 2 years he's gonna be the man in the number 9 jersey
bulawayo-based-bok3/17/2010 8:47 PM
a true legend!.....and no scrumhalf will never have the all-round strengths that Du Preez.......i want none of this "oh....but Genia is better anyway" because Du Preez is invincible and you have to admire what he does no matter which team you support! and his committment to the bulls and the boks has been superb, he deserves a year or two lying on a beach in Japan eating Sushi and drinking Sake(bit too steriotypical??? .....oh well)......
Nikki3/17/2010 8:22 PM
What a boykie! One of the most consistent & best rugby players our country & the world has ever seen. A true legend of the game! We look forward to another year or two with you Fourie & all the best for the future! You deserve to go down as one of the greats!
JAF3/17/2010 6:56 PM
Ash, Fourie didn't lose out on the IRB player of the year in 2009 to Richie McCall. He lost out to Brian 'o Driscoll. 'Anyway, well done to Fourie du Preez. A true legend of rugby. He can still win the S14 two more times. Hehe. :)
sbu3/17/2010 6:22 PM
I dont support the bulls as im a sharks supporter but the Bulls and De Preez play some wonderful solid rugby. One of the best players to grace South African Rugby
Joe3/17/2010 6:07 PM
Noe that is really well said , and this comes from a stormers supporter. To a truly honourable gentleman and sportsperson.
Ash3/17/2010 6:06 PM
What a legend. Brilliant Scrummie and fantastic rugby brain. Im still amazed that He did not land with the IRB player of the year for 2009. No disrespect to Richie McCall (He is brilliant and respected by All) but honestly, 'what impact did he have on the world stage, compared to Fourie in 2009.' On top of that, he was captain of the ALL Blacks that lost to the BOKS 3 times in 1 year. Fourie was robbed.
Proudly Sharks3/17/2010 5:26 PM
What a brilliant guy, he is arguably one of the worlds best players and should one day go down in the rugby hall-of-fame. I really enjoy watching him play and wish him all the best for the future and hope that he can still focus on the next two years (except when he plays against the sharks!:o). You are a truly great sportsman!
Boogeyman3/17/2010 5:22 PM
I reckon he is the best scrumhalf to ever play for the Boks.
Kaapse Piet3/17/2010 5:21 PM
This man has been a true ambassador for the game of Rugby. I can not remember ever seeing him involved in a scuffle or any foul play. And with all the great heights he has achieved, he still gives credit to his coaches. We (Bulls & Springbok supporters) are definitely going to miss you. Hope you can earn another World Cup medal before you leave. You legend!
Scaramouche3/17/2010 4:58 PM
An amazing player. One of, if not the best scrumhalf that has ever played for South Africa.
