Melbourne - Former Wallaby scrumhalf Sam Cordingley will return from French rugby to play with new Super 15 franchise Melbourne Rebels next season, officials said on Saturday.
The former Reds scrumhalf has been playing for Grenoble in France and is well known to Rebels' founding coach Rod Macqueen.
The 34-year-old was given his Wallabies' debut by Macqueen in 2000 and he said it wasn't a difficult decision to join the Rebels.
"After speaking with Rod Macqueen and (chief executive) Brian Waldron about their ideas for taking the club forward, it became a quick decision to join," Cordingley said.
"Being asked to be one of the founding members of the Melbourne Rebels and to be part of building a culture from scratch is an honour.
"It's something not many players get the chance to experience."
The Rebels, who will become Australia's fifth Super 15 team in 2011, said they had also signed back-rower Tim Davidson and outside back Peter Betham.
