Wellington - New Zealand police have condemned the actions of a Sunday newspaper which asked people masquerading as terrorists to smuggle fake bombs into two Super 14 rugby matches last weekend.

Spokesperson Jon Neilson on Friday said police were unlikely to charge the Sunday Star-Times newspaper over the stunt in which an undisclosed number of fake bombs were carried into matches at Hamilton and Christchurch, apparently to test security measures.

"We are aware of the situation and have been looking into it. But at this stage, it would not appear that there has been any offence committed," he said.

Police Minister Judith Collins described the newspaper's actions as "unbelievably stupid and irresponsible."

"This stunt had the potential to result in games being called off and stadiums evacuated," she said. "Common sense would tell you that running around a stadium dressed as a bomber has the potential to end very badly."

The Sunday Star-Times declined comment.

Ok ma lekke stoopid ect but this little stunt has huge ramifications on the poor security situation. We could try it here just befor the SWC and see if our cops are up to par.

@The Voice of Reason. Of course nobody will question their readiness, they are not South Africa. Only our readiness will be questioned. Even though all our stadiums are completed at a stage were Germany (a first world country) was still busy building theirs. I agree, though, this is a very stupid, irresponsible stunt. What were they thinking?

They must have terrorism laws in New Zealand and the Editor should be charged under these laws, maybe he is a terrorist ?

Very stupid stunt. I wonder if this will have people questioning NZ's readiness to host the 2011 Rugby World Cup?
