The Vodacom Bulls were given a major setback on the eve of their match against the Auto and General Lions when winger Francois Hougaard was ruled out with a hamstring strain.
Hougaard couldn’t complete the captain’s practice on a rain-soaked B field at the stadium and the Bulls were forced to replace him with seasoned veteran John Mametsa for the clash.
The injury means a few more shifts for the Blue Bulls side as well, who face Western Province in their Vodacom Cup quarter-final at Loftus’ B field on Saturday, with Springbok Sevens star Deon Helberg replacing Mametsa in that team.
Helberg, who was originally on the bench, will be replaced by Ernst Dinkelmann on the bench for the curtain-raiser.
The Vodacom Bulls can catapult back to the top if they beat the Lions and should they win with a bonus point, will have the luxury of finishing the weekend five points ahead of the chasing pack.
