Bloemfontein – The disappointment is huge, but Springbok flanker Heinrich Brüssow now finally has time for hunting and fishing.

Free Staters and rugby supporters across South Africa were all shattered with the news that the Cheetahs star will not play rugby again this year. However, Brüssow is getting a well-deserved break.

Volksblad
spoke to the rugby hero on Monday before his operation at the Life Rosepark Hospital.

He said the siren had already sounded when he tore ligaments in his left knee against the Hurricanes. There had not even been contact.

“My leg just gave in.”

Brüssow only heard on Sunday that he will be out for a lengthy period.

If everything “goes very well”, Brüssow may be back by the end of the Currie Cup. If not, he will be sidelined until the start of next year’s Super 15.

While he is disappointed, he said that “it happens and is part of the job”.

Brüssow will now work “dutifully” on his rehabilitation and do the things he was not able to for the past five years.

He does not expect his absence from the Cheetahs pack to have a major influence.

“There is a lot of depth in the team.”

Brüssow believed that with star loose forwards such as Ashley Johnson, Hendro Scholtz, Kabamba Floors and Frans Viljoen, the Cheetahs needn’t worry.

He was in the process of adapting to the stricter interpretation of the laws.

Critics believed that it would make him less effective, but he has been outstanding over the past two weeks.

“It is difficult. Everyone has to get used to the new law, but the guys will get used to it,” he said.

Brüssow has previously been sidelined for a lengthy period.

He tore a hamstring when he was a matric pupil at Grey College and was out for between six and eight months.

“It’s part of the job,” he said.

As Hein so indirectly pointed out, why not try to stop the killing in this beautiful country instead of adding to the barbaric savagery??? I'm sure you will find it very rewarding.
Nikki Botha3/10/2010 9:04 AM
If this is the general mentality of people who follow rugby, then thank GOD I have no interest in following the sport. Real men don't kill. VIVA COMPASSION!!!

I am truly amassed at all the veggies standing up and fighting for the poor animals. Why don’t you rather stand up and fight against the other killings taking place in our lovely country. Hunters in conjunction with farmers are doing quit well as far as conservation goes – Thank you. So leave them alone and just carry on caring for you veggies.

@ Jeff Aucamp. As always saying nothing intelligent. Just watch out for your head when you drop that trophy.... (By the way, this post of mine is the attention you so desperately look for. So here's your chance to make your voice heard again. Maybe you'll feel loved or important then)

Bambi methinks thou dost protest too much. We all acknowledge that something dies for another to live. As humans we have a choice to do the least harm, and to want to go out and enjoy taking another life is questionable indeed. Female circumcision, slavery, foot binding, bullfighting, bear baiting etc are all part of culture, it doesn't make it right. We know that animals and fish suffer just as we do. We can choose to live a life that is as non violent as possible and that includes what goes onto our plate; non violence begins with a fork. Acting upon emotion is part of what makes us human. Standing up and saying no when everyone else says yes, refusing to go along with convenience and self indulgence at the expense of another, makes us human.

@Bambi, comparing a human, who has CHOICE ,with animals who live within an ecosystem is not a sensible thing, however i fully agree that hunters are at least more honest regarding their active participation in the slaughter and consumption of another life. We do, however, as i said, have choice, and to choose to go out and enjoy the experience of taking another life whether on land or in water is another thing entirely. We can choose to live a non violent life in which we respect that other lives are not ours to take as we see fit, and still enjoy excellent food. He could have chosen to shoot animals with a camera, thereby allowing the families and friends of that animal to enjoy the presence, and other humans to benefit from this as well. Why everyone and everything must be relegated a monetary value is beyond me, and part of the reason the world is in such a sorry state.

@Balsak - I think you meant "just like the others, he'll come back a STORMER" GO STORMERS GO!!
Jeff Aucamp3/9/2010 1:08 PM

@ Bambi Ek dink nie daar is iemand wat dit beter kon stel nie. Dit is in ons natuur om te jag en so hou ons die wild lewe onder beheer. Lekker jag en geniet die biltong
Blue Jake3/9/2010 12:51 PM
@Bambi. You could have just said: Puck the vegatarians and happy hunting. I lost about 3 minutes of my day by reading your whole story. Good point though.
Balsak3/9/2010 12:19 PM

Janna3/9/2010 12:11 PM
Nothing wrong with hunting or fishing ..at least he is not wearing green underpants with holes or sniffing coke...I belief that those who moan and groan are vegetarians...Heinrich grew up n a farm and handling rifles and fishing rods is part of the Afrikaans culture..live with it..
Bambi3/9/2010 12:03 PM
Heinrich, I always had a lot of respect for you. Now that I have heard that you are a HUNTER and FISHERMEN, I respect you even more. Well done for being a proud hunter. Don't bother yourself with the misinformed who ask "how can you kill a poor defenceless animal?" when they cannot answer "how can you eat a poor defenceless animal that lived it's life in a small fenced-off area, was loaded up onto a crowded truck and stood in line at the abbotoir waiting to be slaughtered?" And to the vegetarians and vegans who complain about hunting, "how can you eat fruit and vegetables when the habitat of poor defenceless animals had to be ploughed up so that your fruit and veg could be planted? And then bugs, worms, rodents, bushpigs, birds etc had to be controlled (poisoned, shot, trapped) so that your fruit/veg arrived all nice and ripe and perfect!" Get real. Wild animals can no longer migrate as man has (necessarily) fenced off farms (but also game reserves). There are no lions on every farm to control the population of herbivores. Managing each ecosystem (farm) is important to maintain it's biodiversity. Let the animals breed endlessly and they will destroy the plants that they feed on and that other animal species need in order to live. Hunting is one way of managing the animal population on farms or reserves. Animals need all the Heinrichs they can get. Hunters are prepared to PAY for the priviledge to hunt so ... farmers are prepared to look after the habitat (which supports all kinds of mammals, insects, snakes, trees, flowers, bgrasses etc" and look after their herds so that they can make money. If they exterminate their animals they will make no money in the future. Hunters PAY for conservation. Anti-hunters PAY lipservice. Do we condemn wild dogs, lions, cheetahs, pythons, eagles and other predators because they kill "defenceless animals"? What? Oh .. we shouldn't because that's nature taking it's course? Well, if it really is about the "defenceless animals" let's kill all the predators and let nature take its course from there so that all the "defenceless animals" can be safe. The entire global ecosystem would collapse within a few decades. Bunny huggers, get real! Just TRY to understand that hunting is an important part of game management. TRY to understand that HUNTERS love being out in the bush, experiencing nature and that they do not just blast off at anything that moves. The farmer calculates that X surplus animals of Y species must be harvested. The hunter knows what the animal costs and what he can afford so he spend maybe a week in the bush and kills say, 4 or 5 animals. All the while he is walking, stalking and crawling in the bush, experiencing nature. An animal that dies from a well placed bullet from a hunter will be lucky. Compare this to the animal being ripped to shreds by a pack of wild dogs, or (if there were no predators) dying a slow death due to disease or hunger (when it's teeth got too worn to chew its food). Bunny huggers, you - along with poachers - are the biggest threat to animals that there is. Get hunting banned and you will see natural habitat on farms all over SA being ploughed up to plant mealies and sunflowers and pumpkins. Stop acting on pure emotion and add some down-to-earth logic into it. And leave Heinrich to go about his hunting and fishing in peace.

Haha, to all the idiots below - I say kill them all and mail me some biltong!! Good Luck in the recovery and happy hunting!!
PETER3/9/2010 11:11 AM
Clever article. Now every loser Cheetah's supporter with a farm or a boat will be falling over themselves to invite him to hunt or fish with them. Once again those that can afford things, get them for free. ENJOY THE BILTONG AND THE SUSHI...........
Viv Elliott3/9/2010 11:02 AM
Hi sad news Sunshine, I am an avid Rugby fan and have been impressed by your arrival. I worried about who would fill Schalks boots and you did it so very well. Just one thing, hunting, come on, nothing manly about shooting a defencless animal, please reconsider this "sport" I will gladly direct you to animal rehab centres where you could send time far better. There is nothing as rewarding as helping these poor creatures. Now I have met many Boks and what impressed me most was their gentleness and caring attitudes. Chat to Bismark, he is a shinning light for many Fourpaws supporters. Please HB, care for them don't kill them. Viv xx
Rick3/9/2010 10:58 AM
Ah shame man, poor animal that must pay with his life because Heinrich is bored at home.
Tray3/9/2010 10:55 AM
So the super hero, who knows what it is to suffer pain in injury, nevertheless thinks that it is "heroic" to inflict pain on helpless animals. Since when is killing the innocent a pastime for any normal decent human being?
sexbomb3/9/2010 10:04 AM
Like they say in the classics"Chit happens",enjoy the break, need you for the end of year tour!!!!!!
Shark3/9/2010 9:49 AM
Maybe a blessing in disguise, considering some rest before the world cup?
Joe3/9/2010 9:29 AM
Good luck with the op and I hope the post operative recovery is a quick one. At keast no beers fetching for Jake. Stywe lyne met die visvang!
