Bok loosies back for the Bulls

Johannesburg - The return of Springbok loose forwards Pierre Spies and Dewald Potgieter to the starting line-up for Saturday’s Super 14 rugby match against the Highlanders at Loftus Versfeld is the main selection news from the Blue Bulls camp.

Spies comes in for Danie Rossouw who moves to lock in place of Flip van der Merwe who drops to the bench.

On the other flank Derick Kuun is retained ahead of Deon Stegmann. “This is in accordance with our squad system and the agreement with players,” said Bulls coach Frans Ludeke at the team announcement on Wednesday.

“Every one of the players has been playing good rugby. The squad system is working well and all the players understand it.”

Ludeke has selected Stegmann and another loose forward, Pedrie Wannenburg, on the bench. He views the breakdown play of the Highlanders as one of their strong points for which he has made provision with the inclusion of the two additional loose forwards in a bench that boasts five forwards.

Prop Bees Roux was originally selected as one of the replacements but cut his eye against the scrumming machine on Wednesday morning. He is replaced on the bench by Rossouw de Klerk, who moves up from the Vodacom Cup side.

The versatility of wing Francois Hougaard who can cover at scrumhalf and the two backs on the bench, Jacques-Louis Potgieter and Jaco van der Westhuyzen who can cover the positions of flyhalf and centre in the case of Potgieter and fullback and flyhalf in the case of Van der Westhuyzen has made more backs on the bench an unnecessary luxury.

Springbok scrumhalf Heini Adams will therefore play for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in what could be a crunch match against the Golden Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Bulls team is: Zane Kirchner, Gerhard van den Heever, Stephan Dippenaar, Wynand Olivier, Francois Hougaard, Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies, Dewald Potgieter, Derick Kuun, Victor Matfield (capt.), Danie Rossouw, Werner Kruger, Gary Botha, Gurthro Steenkamp.

Substitutes: Bandise Maku, Rossouw de Klerk, Flip van der Merwe, Deon Stegmann, Pedrie Wannenburg, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Jaco van der Westhuyzen.

Don't worry Boet. He is probably using Xenadrine RFA-X which burns all the fat from between the muscles and creates a very defined look which also helps when trying to bulk up in muscle without increasing bodyfat. It is a supplement used by body builders to help get that defined look, so screen away, he should pass with flying colours. Like the bulls hope they do well. Stormers looking good to. Sharks in a bit of a fix but sure they will pick themselves up and get on with it. They have a very good lineup and should be push on without a problem. Cheetahs are legend in the way they can beat any team on the paddock when in form. Lions i feel for and hope the other teams leave the Lions players alone the end of this season. Good luck to all the teams this week.

@bulawayo based Bok... Personally, I think that Potgieter is a better player, and prefer him to P3 in the no7 jumper... Potgieter is still young, but I believe he will eventually be first choice for the Boks' no 7 jumper. Kuun is sometimes a bit hotheaded, I will aggree. But it is a fortunate disposition that the Bulls struggle with ito loosies, who to choose, who to leave on the bench, and who to rest. Any one of those 6 or 7 loosies are exceptional players. @Velle, don't worry... I have enough faith in Kuun and Dewald as our flankers.

what the hell is Flip VdM doing on the bench?!!!! he has been Sa's best lock in the competition so far!.......also, i know they are using depth to rest players but Stegmann, Spies and Wannenburg are the best all-round loose trio in the competition!......kuun and Potgieter are still too lightweight to play against the NZ sides!!......bulls by 16
VELLE3/10/2010 7:36 PM
al wedstryde wat die Bulls verlede jaar verloor het, was toe Stegman nie gespeel het nie, laat mens dink
@jade3/10/2010 7:06 PM
yes they get tested all the time and still P3 got away with it!
The Godfather3/10/2010 6:17 PM
Though I'm all for the rotation system being used (wisely), the boys have just had 2 weeks rest. Stegmann is our best fetcher and Flippie has been outstanding with Bakkies gone. Danie and Derek are fearsome players as well, but don't you think they might have a greater impact off the bench? It's no time to start getting complacent. Especially after what happened last year against the Highlanders.

Moenie altyd probeer kak maak nie, ou, anders verloor jy jou trefkrag.

@Chimsoro - I see the recent rains have driven you from your preferred place of residence, the underside of a piece of bark in the sewer. Your inability, I would say unwillingness, but it is apparent that you do really try to involve yourself in adult conversation, but you inability to do so is down to your level of maturity which until now has only been seen in a foetus. I hasten to add that your level of education rivals only that of a primate, I say hasten as I am somewhat unfairly grouping them with you.

Some people just love excercizing. Many sportsman (and woman) reach a point where it become addictive to train and they actually enjoy it. I speak from personal experience and believe me, I have never taken any drug or other enhancement products. If you look at most Iron Man athletes and even swimmers, you'll see the same build on them. They call it training and good genes also help. Have you ever seen Ray Mordt without a shirt? Even now at his age he looks like an Iron Man. People can get quite nasty on this blog - just out of pure jealousy. When he plays for the Boks and scores some of those brathtaking tries, he's great and when playing for the Bulls, he's this and that and whatever. Quite pathetic and very childish i'd say.
@ @Paul C3/10/2010 4:16 PM
His life threatening disease didn't just clear up asshole, he got treated and had to retire untill further notice. Have you ever heard of such a thing. Let me quickly remind you of Andrè Venter. Also got a life threatening disease and lost the use of his legs as a result of it. Is that also funny to you. Sick f@#kin bastard.
Bulla3/10/2010 4:02 PM
....Maak die Bulle almal Bokke..!!!!
@ T with an O3/10/2010 3:54 PM
WAAR DE F@K kom JY vandaan.Dis nou die domste kommentaar wat ek nog gehoor het,ek is geskok oor jou,wat is jy?????????????Kyk vanaand in jou spieel en vra jouself wie jy is,jou plank.
Anti bulls3/10/2010 3:52 PM
@Anti-Bulls ? some of us actually have a job to do. Spies is not really something for the eye (himself and his game) and may I remind you bunch of faggets that you are the people singing "liefling" to another man. chimsoro I totally agree with you. All these bunch of wankers can do is cheat (then brag about it as if it is an accomplishment) and snort drugs and then think it is cool - losers.
@ T with an O3/10/2010 3:31 PM
Pathetic and just plain stupid. Go read soccer kak and leave rugby alone.
@ chimsoro3/10/2010 3:27 PM
WoW, so lame. Try harder, you didn't make any impression.
@Paul C3/10/2010 3:14 PM
Are you just saying that Spies works harder than any rugby player on the planet? Ok thought so, just checking. Interesting how he got a life threatening disease recently - but then it magically cleared up?
@T with an O3/10/2010 3:00 PM
u'r a real fumb duck! It's 2 different sport codes! Lennox Lewis will kick anybodies ass in the boxing ring, let him play a game of rugby against Spies and then see if he's that mean! U peanut!
Boet3/10/2010 2:58 PM
@Jade - If that is the case, then I am happy. I am just tired of speculation about Spies. Bulls fans say he doesn't use steroids and anti-Bull fans say of course he does, but nobody KNOWS. If they get tested regularly by trustworthy doctors and the doctors don't cook the reports, then I am satisfied. I hope you are right and that is the case. @T with an O - and Nigel Mansell will beat Lennox Lewis at F1, Nascar and go-carting even though he has been retired for 20 years. So what is your point? Pierre Spies is not a boxer, but I would like to see him make an exception in your case! Even if he could only break your typing finger!
Province3/10/2010 2:49 PM
@ Fetcher Fan - Have to agree, would have Stegmann & Potgieter in combination with Spies, with the talented Dries v S/wyk on the bench. Honestly do not rate Wannenberg.
GP3/10/2010 2:44 PM
Chimsoro. I am not a Bulls fan, but your comment is pathetic and childish. The Bulls are just a good team and thats it.
T with an O3/10/2010 2:41 PM
ag spies is just a bIg white gay boy who will get knocked out by lennox lewis any day even though lennox lewis has been retired for like 10 years
Shark Fan3/10/2010 2:40 PM
What an impressive team this Bulls outfit is. It is great to see guys performing like they do. Looking at Spies' condition, these guys are super-tuned and focused. I am just happy to watch great rugby being played by them - and admire Spies for the athlete that he is. That is as close to a perfect human being that you can get (apart from Julius Dilema). Keep it up Bulls - I will watch in dismay as my beloved Sharks bumble along trying to get it together.
SHARKY3/10/2010 2:35 PM

Jade3/10/2010 2:32 PM
Read John Smit's book. They get tested all the time.

Not playing Stegmann? Nearly backfired two weeks ago. Hope Ludeke is saving him for the Bokke.
Paul C3/10/2010 2:24 PM
Hallo Beast ... hallo ... hallo ... are you there? Don't need to go on 'roids to look like Spies bru ... you just TRAIN and EXERCISE ... consistently ... focussed and dedicated ... as easy as falling from a tree ... just open your hands! Maybe you and other sceptics should try bringing home the same message to your ... well ... er ... less successful other South African SUPER 14 franchises!

chimsoro3/10/2010 2:22 PM
blaaaah blaaah...the bulls could field the pretoria boys high team in blue and still win...why...because they pay the refs off .....the bulls are average players...the refs are awesome and very rich....
Anti-Bulls ?3/10/2010 2:21 PM
Where are those gayish anti-Bulls voices. This report is online for almost an hour and I can't believe we haven't heard of those pathetic anit-Bulls idiots. They are actually so pathetic, they are anti-rugby supporters and not anti-Bulls. The pic of Spies should attract their attention, as most of them seem to have an "eye" on him. We'll I hope the Bulls play good rugby and keep all our other SA supporters happy with winning rugby. Good luck and good luck to all our other teams as well. Hope this weekend the luck will turn for the Sharks and Lions.
bert3/10/2010 2:21 PM
What a great Squad this bulls team is. And Bakkies have to return. Its Crazy to think about the amount of talent in the squad. And all them are local Boys. JLP is the 2nd best flyhalf last year in SA. Jaco vdw has his critics but he is still decent to great full back. Steggman and Flippie in the last few weeks have been the outstanding. THis all from the bench.
Boet3/10/2010 2:19 PM
@Beast - I wish they would put him through a thorough screening and publish the results, because I am a Bulls supporter, but even I have my doubts about him! He is just too big and well-defined! When he didn't go to France for RWC 2007 because of some life threatening illness, but started playing again so soon after the World Cup, I also thought he might just have been giving the IRB drug screenings a wide berth. As I said, I am a Bulls (and Pierre Spies) fan, but I would like to know. If he is clean, may he play for the Bulls and Boks for many more years, but if he is not, then I would rather do without him. I would rather end last in the S14 than be deceived by a cheater representing my province. I know a lot of anti-Bull supporters will say I am naive and of course he is injecting something, but I am not going to listen to speculation. I would like an impartial screening by a trustworthy doctor.
@Nikki3/10/2010 2:18 PM
Yes, steroids have that effect.
Bulls fan forever3/10/2010 2:18 PM
@Beast. What's wrong, never seen a big rugby player before? It's called hard work mate. No go test your brain, it seems to be on something! Awesome team! Looking forward to the Bulls klapping the Highlanders at Loftus.... ---------------------------------------- some Spies info: Although he plays as a loose forward, he has considerable pace, having been timed at 10.7 seconds over 100m. This is especially impressive considering his size (194 cm tall and 111 kg); he has played wing for the Bulls and Springboks when they experienced an injury crisis. Spies is known as one of the best ball carriers in the game - he can step, run around or over a defender. “ Spies power cleans 135kg. He dead lifts 240kg. He bench presses 165kg. Only mildly impressed? Wait, here are some more. He is able to do pull-ups with a 50kg weight between his legs. He can launch his 108kg body 1.4m onto a raised platform, sprints for 835m before slowing on a repeated sprint-ability test and has a body-fat percentage of 6.5. —Ryan Vrede, Keo.co.za

Man looks fearsome and should form a great combination with the on-form Smith and Burger this year. Hope the Bulls thrash the Highlanders and obviously hope the Stormers hammer the Canes.
Unabashed Dutchman3/10/2010 2:00 PM
@ Nikki + Beast: I think every male Stormers supporter wanted to say something critical of the Bulls in this forum, but they're all gawking at this pic and forgot to. Luke Watson probably has it up against his wall in the UK, LOL! How can you not win with freakishly built players like these? Go Bulls, simply the best!
jaco3/10/2010 1:51 PM
ek dink ons moet stegman terugkry by die cheetahs waar hy na waarde geskat sal word - hy is in elk geval in grey kollege grootgemaak
Nikki3/10/2010 1:48 PM
...just look at that pic! A fearsome sight! The man looks like a Gladiotor! Go Pierre! Go Bulls!
Luke3/10/2010 1:39 PM
Be Afraid, Be Vary Afraid!!! I bet you wont put Highlanders down to win!!! Go Bulle!
Beast3/10/2010 1:36 PM
Not usually one to ogle other men, but Spies is a big unit - a physical specimen of note in that pic - has he been tested?
