Bakkies vs Brad at Loftus

2010-05-04 07:30

J.J. Harmse

Pretoria – Bakkies Botha is ready for Brad Thorn and whoever else comes along his path in the Super 14.

The fiery Bulls lock was delighted at making his first start of the year against the Sharks at the weekend and is now eager to get his game to “the high standards of my team-mates” as soon as possible.

The next step to that is Friday night against the Crusaders, for whom Thorn has proved himself as New Zealand’s version of Botha.

“We will always respect the Crusaders as a team. Their history is testimony to that (them deserving of respect) and I believe they will come to Loftus to prove a point,” Botha said from next to the Bulls’ soaking wet training field.

“But that does not mean you can’t get stuck into them. Thorn is a tough opponent, but I’m ready for him.”

The wet fields of the past week or two boosted Botha’s confidence.

“Yes, on the one hand it was a good thing that the fields were so wet as it placed more pressure on the ankle and that is why I’m very satisfied with how I came through training and matches, even if my body is stiff,” he said.

Botha feels it was also to his advantage that there were more rolling mauls.

“The game is then contested on my terms a little more. I’m happy when there are more mauls,” he said.

The new interpretation of the breakdown laws have required Botha to adapt, but he enjoys it.

“The new laws lead to more mauls, so I enjoy it,” he said.

“The ball is in play more, but it gives the bigger guys chance to carry the ball more often. You definitely have to be fitter than a year or two ago.”

Botha is as delighted to be joining the side as his team-mates are about welcoming him back.

“I did not expect to be out of action for so long, but am eager to do my bit again. The other locks in the team played superbly when I was not there, so I have big shoes to fill,” said Botha.

“That is why I want to be ready as soon as possible. The match fitness is not there yet, but I’m working hard to get to the same level as my team-mates.”

According to Botha, the one thing that has not changed about the Bulls’ game is their ability to remain patient.

“The team is older and wiser and there is a lot of experience in the brains trust. The game is analysed, we adapt and the correct decisions are taken on the field,” said Botha.

“Look at how often we trail at half-time. But by staying patient we manage to turn it around.”

Botha believes the team’s spiritual and physical approach is right.

“We just need to fine-tune a little every week. If we’re clinical and use our chances, we will win on Friday.”

It doesn't matter what Bakkies say, the Crusaders will beat them by 10 and including the Bonus Point!!! My lewe is Wit en Blou, I'm a WP and STORMERS FAN for LIFE and YOU????

  • Blessed assurance - 2010-05-04 08:05

Nice pic of Bakkies praying. Nothing like blessing an opponent before subjecting him to dirty play. There was a time when Rugby was a GAME for gentlemen who were able to distinguish between play and religion. A Bulls fan that I know told me that I should support them as they play in honour of the Lord. The Bulls and their fans are a strange bunch indeed!

  • Viv - 2010-05-04 08:06

Bakkies is a thug. Was at the Shark V Bulls game this weekend and sure enough Bakkies was back to his old dirty tricks again in no time. Hope Brad gives you the thumping you deserve Bakkies. Otherwise go Bulls!

  • Bloutrein - 2010-05-04 08:15

Go Bakkies, show Brad what the meaning of Iron is!! Haha I bet Bekker and Fondse from the Stormers are starting to wet their pants when they heard the news of Bakkies being fit! And the advantage for the Bulls is that he is fresh and hungry, he raises the spirits in that team by another 15%. Defestating news for any Bulls oponent! Go Bakkies go BULLSS!!!!!

  • storm warning - 2010-05-04 08:30

  • Gtr - 2010-05-04 08:59

Ag, shame... and every time you suckers predict how the Bulls will get beaten and humiliated by this and that team. I'll give it to you, you were right, on occasions... 2 out of 11, that's a fairly respectable accuracy rate, hey Balsak and Chimsoro?

  • Wiggi - 2010-05-04 09:05

"...Rugby was a GAME for gentlemen...". What a load of nonsense like divie said go and watch ballet. You guys have serious issues - every chance you get trying to belittle others to make yourself feel more worthwile - get a life. Bakkies, play your game and be the best you can be, for yourself, your family and for South-Africa. Between the Bulls and Stormers please bring the super 14 title back to SA again.

  • Dingbat - 2010-05-04 09:09

The core, the basis, the foundation of the All Blacks was systematically demolished by the Stormers last weekend. Surely they will do their homework to prevent a reoccurence. Now they face a cocky Bulls side who are far less disciplined. I predict the worste next two weeks for the Bulls. It'll be a sad way to end off the S14 league games. Especially for their supporters. Maybe they can regroup in the playoffs.

  • Anti bull - 2010-05-04 09:16

bakkies is a moron as is the rest of the bulls team they are gonna get f** up this weekend and brad you go boy.@Blessed assurance - must agree people who play for the Lord sure as hell don't play like this idiot.

  • @BALSAK - 2010-05-04 09:27

This article had nothing to do with the Stormers. Every week you rant about the Stormers this, the Bulls that but never talking any sense! If I remember correctly you said the same before the Bulls & Sharks game last week? The Sharks are going to mess with the Bulls...bla...bla...bla. Stop talking k@k. You are a disgrace to the Stormers and S.A rugby supporters.... I hope the Bulls beat the Stormers come the 15th just so you can keep you're pie hole shut...Go pet you're Karoo skaap and drink you're papsak, leave this comments section for educated people.

  • Spindle - 2010-05-04 09:32

Balsak, shame that sucks!!!

  • NoBull - 2010-05-04 09:38

@ commenter 5/4/2010 9:27AM : "Educated people" you say? Well, an educated person would know that it's spelled "your", not "you're" in the context that you used it.

You know, it takes a big Moron to see a small one.... I agree with you guys, the Stormers are a great outfit and filled with stars, but they have not been properly tested in an all S.A derby. Let's see what happens after the next 2 games, will you guys still be so big mouth when you're Stormertjies loose or will it be the ref's fault again? O ja, don't go on strike again before the semi's... you really made you're name gat last time.

All is well guys - Another usual week for the BULLS where they will again win because balsakkie has again predicted that they will lose - and we all know that guarantees that the BULLS will finalize a home semi this week. Man does this guy give Stormer supporters a bad name or what - you would have to go MILES to find such a childish idiot here in Gauteng

  • SR - 2010-05-04 10:21

Go Bulls!!! get that Bonus....., Hell of a season its been. Secure 2 SA Home Semi's

  • 23rdPlayer - 2010-05-04 10:25

I hope the bulls and stormers draw their matches( league and the final of super14/2010) South African teams have so many obstacles ie: politics, adverse conditions when playing their away matches, dubious refereeing, our anthem being made a mockery of etc, yet LOOK at how well the BULLS and STORMERS have coped and conquered!!! Come on folks lets back SOUTH AFRICA and our GREAT rugby tradition by beating the odds against us on and off the field and make the world acknowledge rugby= South Africa. BULLS and STORMERS do it for us your fans please,Your South Africans!!!!!!

  • al - 2010-05-04 10:28

"balsak! jy is n goeie voorbeelt hoekom n mens nie met jou sussie lol nie! wat n absoluute poepol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Vaste 6 - 2010-05-04 10:30

Nothing personal, but Bakkies gets blown up for foul play weekend after weekend and lately he took over from Schalk for yellow cards. The Bulls can defend him all they want and back him all the way, its a bonus fotr the opponents anyway, so, YOU GO BAKKIES !! Last Saturday, 2 penalties in 40 mins, chances are that the Bulls would have lost the game if Bakkies played 80 mins. Feel free to call me names for my opinion, but these are still the facts. Balsak & Wagga: you really embarres your teams and co-supporters.

  • Bloumasjien - 2010-05-04 10:35

    Die BAAS is terug!

  • Koos van die Kaap - 2010-05-04 10:36

Bakkies is 'n briljante (BRILJANT in hoofletters) speler - geen twyfel.

  • Big Blue - 2010-05-04 10:42

...Superman wears Blue, ....Bakkies is simply the best..!! ....just like the Blue Bulls..!! .....Go Bulls..!!

  • fuzzy - 2010-05-04 10:43

Personally I reckon Bakkies is overated, even prior to his injury, when last did anyone see him see him making the hard yards with ball in hand? Sure he is big and strong but this is no longer enough in the modern game. If one drops the hype surrounding Bakkies' name he is eclipsed by many other players. Even such donkeys like Wannenberg and Rossouw.

  • Boerseun - 2010-05-04 10:51

LOL

  • Lincoln - 2010-05-04 11:00

R u seriuos. Bakkies is one of the most physically dominating locks in the modern game. The reason you don't see him running with the ball is becuase that's not his job. The Bulls already have a loose athletic lock who gains meters and links with the back line. Bakkies does all the hard graft, defensively and in the rucks.

  • Wat nou die blou!! - 2010-05-04 11:30

i feel sorry for Bakkies. Lets just hope he last the duration of the game. Judging by his last performance, i doubt he will last 60 min

  • zandberg jansen - 2010-05-04 11:36

Bakkies Botha is n mitte.

  • Gtr - 2010-05-04 11:51

@ @ Gtr... I don't go predicting a Stormers loss every week. If I did, please remind me when. Otherwise, shut up. What I do state, is when I believe it might a be a tough match. But these days I'm enjoying a Stormers' loss a lot more than in the past, due to the drivel that's is spewed by losers, and jealous fans like yourself. I did predict that the Lions will go down again this week, in a moment of fustration with pricks like youself, which, if the Lions win, I'll appologise. There are some awesome, good people, supporting the Stormers, you should somewhere meet some of them, I hope. This week I predict that the Stormers should win, but I'm not sure that they will get the bonuspoint. I may be wrong, but I don't go saying how the Sharks will beat the Stormers with a bonuspoint and twenty points. I keep my predictions to Superbru, where I'm right +/- 70% of the time. And in case you don't know, that includes ALL matches in the S14. So, there is room for improvement, and I'm NO prophet, nor do I claim to be. It just puzzles me that there are people that have been proven wrong 9 times out of 11, and they STILL make silly predictions, and rave about themselves. And boy, do they celebrate when they were right? But the 9 times they hit their names with a plank doesn't count. Now is that STUPID or what? 18% success rate. Wow!! Amazing. And that goes for the Bulls fans that predict losses for the Stormers as well. I do aggree that the Stormers are playing good rugby, and the Bulls will have their work cut out for them to retain the S14 title. The S14 matches are played in reality, not in a fantasy. I can understand that you have stereotyped me as a 'Brannas and Coke kanaalbarber', but I assure you, I don't use much alcohol, and I don't stay in Pretoria. I don't even own a Ford. Shows you that you have NO judgement. Your people skills must suck, like the company you keep. Birds of a feather flock together, and from what I've seen, the company you keep, with Balsak and Chimsoro, is pretty dodgy. Bitterness ultimately lead to cancer, I so suggest that you deal with it, before it destroys you.

  • logical - 2010-05-04 11:57

Stel voor jy dink voor jy skryf!!!! jy maak jou naam gat!!!!

  • STORMER - 2010-05-04 12:10

@Boerseun - Bekker bang vir Bakkies? Andy Goode wasn't even scared of Bakkies for those 40 mins on Saturday....

  • Pieter Fourie - 2010-05-04 12:16

Go Crusaders!!!!!!!!Show the liefling........cheap wine........xle big six fans how it is done!!!!!!

  • Snotklap - 2010-05-04 12:17
