Strauss quits as Lions captain

2012-08-02 07:43

Cape Town - Loose forward Josh Strauss has stepped down from his captaincy role at the Lions to focus more on his own game.

Beeld
reports that the pressure of a tough Super Rugby competition - in which the Lions finished bottom of the log - combined with the players' soured relationship with suspended coach John Mutchell, has taken its toll on Strauss.

He is not happy with his own form and wants to focus solely on improving his game. He also feels he can give his career a boost by making a positional shift to blindside flank.

And he's already been picked there for the Lions' friendly match against the Blue Bulls at Wits University on Friday night. Strauss moves to No 7 in place of the promising Grant Hattingh, who has since joined the Bulls.

Lions interim coach Johann Ackermann has handed the captaincy to prop JC Janse van Rensburg on a temporary basis.

The Golden Lions, who won the Currie Cup with Strauss as their leader last year, start the defence of their crown at home against the Free State Cheetahs on August 11.

Teams:

Golden Lions: 15 Andries Coetzee, Ruan Combrinck, Lionel Mapoe, Waylon Murray, 11 Anthony Volmink, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Derick Minnie, 7 Josh Strauss, 6 Jaco Kriel, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Martin Bezuidenhout, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg (captain).

on paper the lions are a serious outfit. strong back line and forward pack that has proved its worth. it is sad that they did so poor but hopefully some retention in cc for them perhaps.

and by the end of this weekend . . . 'strauss quits as england captain'

      mike.barmby - 2012-08-02 17:33

That is quite frankly impossible. He has not played for England and has not naturalized in England. He is still at the Lions but has just stood down as captain.

      dave.short.102 - 2012-08-02 18:38

I like the way you think!!!!!!!!!! HeHe

      dave.short.102 - 2012-08-02 18:39

@MIKE, his actually talking about Andrew, the English Captain of a game we call Cricket!

  • jaco.botha.142 - 2012-08-02 08:37

Get out of there Strauss. Thats a sinking ship you're on

      willy.vanniekerk.9 - 2012-08-02 08:44

Sinking? No mate, clearly you have no idea about the union or the players, definitely not a Transvaal/Lions supporter. Take the blinkers off

      jaco.botha.142 - 2012-08-02 08:46

Dude, im actually a lion, i just dont see them going anywhere to be honest. How many years in a row are we gona be bottom of log??

      willy.vanniekerk.9 - 2012-08-02 10:31

A die hard fan or player would never leave a sinking ship. Big things coming, especially with the Queens not playing next year.

      aubrey.gloster - 2012-08-02 11:13

      Jaco gaan paai jou hand

      louis.bensch.31 - 2012-08-02 16:10

Jaco, hier praat ons van Currie Cup, duidelik is jy nie n ware Lion supporter nie want raai wat......Die Leeus is Currie Cup kampioene... duh

      dave.short.102 - 2012-08-02 18:40

JAA Join the Bulls, you are WAY better than SPIES!!!!!!!!

      suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-08-02 19:27

I agree Jaco, this union is so useless even my beloved Dale College can beat these idiots

  • johann.verster.94 - 2012-08-02 08:47

      Priesterb - 2012-08-02 09:04

Strauss should join the Bulls - swap him with Spies! Blou Bul Groete!

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-02 09:36

Priestb... never ever dreamt I read a Bulls supporter say that!!!!

      lindy.leroux - 2012-08-02 09:49

Spies is going to the Kings to join his mate Watson! " J "

  • byron.wright.102 - 2012-08-02 09:11

Think the move to 7 will suit him. Your big ball carrier should play blindside not 8. The lions tend to get this wrong- first think the Sharks did with Deysel and Alberts(both Lions) is move them from 8 to 7. The more skilled and Athletic players should play 8 eg. Kieran read, Joe Van Niekerk, Ryan Kankowski(left spies out but he has previously been very skilled and useful)

  • simon.lacey.167 - 2012-08-02 09:12

This mean he's looking to move on? I seriously hope not. He is a top player and we need him bossing the pack going forward.

      anthony.denozo.336 - 2012-08-02 11:38

Don't think he's leaving Lions, just stepping down as captain of Lions to focus on his Game

  • charles.dalton.372 - 2012-08-02 09:40

If the lions are out of the Super 15 next season (take a look at the www.super15.com. Look at the very top of the page right hand side they already have a link. According to the blurb they are assured a place for 2013). If this happens, then of course any player with the chance of being a Springbok or earn more is going to leave. Sorry....I really feel for Lions supporters.

      aubrey.gloster - 2012-08-02 11:18

Joining the highly paid Premier/Heineken will ensure the Lions will attract even more top young players than they already have.

  • nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-08-02 09:57

He is a great player and captain, but yes, did not have the same impact this season as last season. I'm sure once he feels ready he will be captain again. GO LIONS!!

  • raeez.omar.5 - 2012-08-02 10:48

You shouldnt have left the Lions Grant. You warming the Bulls 2nd team bench ALREADY...

  • aubrey.gloster - 2012-08-02 11:16

Lions to play in Premier/Heineken next year if they are not in Super. I don't really care for the Super. Lions will win Currie again. Sorry WP.

      suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-08-02 19:31

at the rate you are going at Ellis Park, no one cares anymore, you can even join Kenya Cup and no one will miss you

  • skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-08-02 11:31

Now and then I think of when the Lions played together Like when the Red and white flags used to fly Told myself that you were the team for me sponsored by the Xerox company But that was love and it's an ache I still remember You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness Like seeing Elis Park with lights off in the end SA rugby never did make sense SARU said the Kings would be their friends But I'll admit that I was glad it was over But you didn't have to kick them off Make out like winning never happened and beating the Sharks was nothing It was Strauss's beard I used to love But but now there's only stubble and that feels so rough Why are are all our scores so low? Position on the log has become our highest number And now the captain has to go Lions're just a team I used to know

      dave.short.102 - 2012-08-02 18:43

HET jy nog al jou varkies?

      mike.barmby - 2012-08-02 20:15

Why are you talking about his piglets?

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-08-04 00:01

No the piggies are right where I left where I left them. Under a bush next to the freeway with a camera making the roads safer for us all. Bless those varkies.

  • skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-08-02 11:31

Looks like SARU has really screwed you over While you were bent over learning how to scrum Said you've gotta learn to play Win one of your games away Now you've seen your best players go And play for a team that was relegated loooong ago

  • clive.harding3 - 2012-08-02 13:36

And now the assistant coach (Carlos Spencer) and conditioning coach (Wayne Taylor) have been fired. What the hell is going on!!!!???????
