Stofile set for SARU return

By Stephen Nell - Die Burger

Cape Town – Mike Stofile is set to return to SA Rugby as a director of its board on Friday, while the smaller unions are also ready to strengthen their grip on the running of the game.

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) is holding its annual general meeting at Newlands on Friday and two independent board members (one black and one white) of SA Rugby have to be elected.

Stofile, who lost a battle for the presidency against Oregan Hoskins last year, is unopposed. Jan Marais and Keith Parkinson are set to battle it out for the other spot.

Marais was president of the Griffons until he was nominated to be a director of SA Rugby’s board recently. The expectation is that the nine smaller unions will vote for him to oust Parkinson.

The South African Rugby Players’ Association (SARPA) also raised concerns this week about a proposal by the Griffons to enlarge the number of directors of SA Rugby’s board from 9 to 23 members.

That will mean all 14 union presidents are appointed as directors and the smaller unions will have a bigger say in the running of South African rugby.

“Most of the smaller unions are struggling financially. They don’t have the knowledge or business acumen to run rugby. They want to get their hands on the money,” a source told Die Burger.

SARU announced last week that its cash reserves was at a record R70 million.

SARPA chief executive Piet Heymans expressed his concern about the idea of a bigger board.

“Our biggest concern is corporate governance. Boards should be smaller and more effective. If this proposal is accepted, SARU’s Presidents Council will be duplicated at board level. It’s premature to change the board now,” said Heymans.
