Steyn's boot keeps Pienaar out

Johannesburg – Ruan Pienaar will only be picked at flyhalf for the Springboks again if he can get his goalkicking standard up to that of Morné Steyn.

Until that happens, coach Peter de Villiers says he will have to act in the best interests of the team and country and pick Steyn, even if he rates Pienaar highly as a playmaker.

“I still see Ruan as a flyhalf. I think he is a good decision-maker and schemer, and that is how I like my flyhalves,” said De Villiers.

“But Morné kicks like a machine and everybody is surprised when he misses. You can’t ignore that.

“There are reasons for Ruan not reaching his potential this year. These include injuries and the lack of goalkicking opportunities at his union, but as coach I understand now that talent cannot always be the only measure.

“It’s also about your contribution in the team context and in that sense I cannot do without Morné. He is a brilliant goalkicker,” said De Villiers.

De Villiers admitted that he would miss Frans Steyn and Jean de Villiers when he picks his squad of 37 players on 31 October for games against Leicester and Saracens, and Tests against France, Italy and Ireland.

“But they know where they stand. You have to be in the country to make the Bok side. We will get someone to fill in for them,” he said.

“Nobody thought Percy Montgomery and Os du Randt could be replaced. This is an ideal opportunity for two new players to grab their opportunities and take those places.”

De Villiers also provided an insight into his plans for the tour.

“We have to look further than maintaining our number one status because 2011 is just around the corner. That is why a few new faces will make the squad. We have to expose new players to the Bok culture,” he said.

De Villiers refers to Heinrich Brüssow, who toured at the end of last year and played only five minutes in the last Test. He performed well from the outset when he was needed this year.

“We want to show a few players what it means to be a Springbok, but nobody will get a cheap blazer from me. They have to deserve it,” said De Villiers.

His starting line-up for the Test against France on 13 November will not fly out to London with the rest of the touring squad on 2 November.

This group will only join the touring squad on 6 November.

“Those 15  guys will prepare in South Africa for the test against France, but everyone in the 22 for the game against the Leicester Tigers will have a chance of making the substitutes bench for the Test in Toulouse,” said De Villiers.

Otto, being good at Super 14 level does not naturally mean good at international level, and while I agree that he had a good Super 14 campaign, I do not want to see Olivier at bok 12. Too one dimensional, and needs tons more creative flair to be successful. He is already totally worked out at that level, and is nowhere near de Villiers and Frans Steyn. I also do not think that Joe Pieterson is the real deal. Maybe Kirshner, given time...

I think Pienaar to back-up Olivier at 12 will grow him into a future 10 for the Boks. Pienaar at 12 will bring a massive new dimension to our midfield attack, and with Olivier just as comfortable at 13 as at 12, Div have some combination options. Our biggest concern however is at tighthead, and we need to groom some young guys now if we want to win in 2011. Joe Pietersen must also be groomed at 15 on test level as soon as possible.

Olivier would be the natural choice for Inside Center. I believe he deserves another chance. If he can settle down in that position he will become one of the best in the world. He just needs to get some confidence in a Bok jersey. He was by far the best center in the Super 14.
forget 10, who will be 12??10/2/2009 12:38 AM
Forget Pienaar at 10, We has shifted him all around, let him settle at 9 - I think he offers a much better replacement to Du Preez than fat Jan. I think the more important question is who is our 12?? Please not Olivier, last weekends game proves nothing, he has not done anything special in a bok jersey. I would like to see Peter Grant at inside, not my 1st or 2nd choice, they aint here no more. But 9 Du Preez 10 Steyn 11 Habana 12 Grant 13 Fourie 14 JP 15 Kirshner looks like a decent backline, Fourie and Dupreez are going to have to take over the calls. Who are the other options? Adi (kuk on defence) ummmm??

Don't look down, the fall is very long from cloud 9. You sound like a typical "Liefling".

Quite interesting.... "For instance, now that Gary Botha returns to S.A, he must play 3 games in for the B side of the Blue Bulls, before he can be eligible for the A side of the Blue Bulls. By doing this, we would not need any contracted overseas player, and if any province wants to sign a overseas player, that player must play 3 games for the respective provinces’ B side as well, before he can be chosen for the A side" The gods of SA rugby will do everything possible denying the Bulls a chance playing the opposition with their best players... It is indeed a compliment to the Blue Bulls Rugby Union.... The BBRU is the best in the country if not in the world...

It is, and will remain a travesty until Francois Steyn and Jean de Villiers is back in a Bok jersey. Why can't they reach an agreement with them that says "Ok, you have 2 years to play overseas, but after that you are back in SA. You deserve a payday after having already proven yourselves. In the meantime we will pick you for the Bok team.". If you want to give other players experience drop Jacobs and January and you have two spots to blood new talent.

Dude, leave a comment not a novel! Nobody's gonna read that much. It hurts the eyes.

Top overseas players like Chris Jack can do wonders for any team, especially for the youngster in a team, which he surely did the past season for W.P. but, overseas players can also just come here for a nice payday, especially if they can’t find a club in the U.K or France that shows interested in them. We also loose sight of forgotten talent like Hilton Lobberts and the trouble is that we lose good players between school level and club/provincial level. We should integrate the Varsity Cup with the Club Championships, and run it at the same time as the Super 14. This new competition should replace the current Vodacom Cup, the Varsity Cup and Club Championships. Only registered students can play for the Universities in their respective province, the rest, like provincial players from the B section or Vodacom Cup level and one’s not making the Super 14 squads, are then based as club players in their respective Province. These matches will be played as curtain raisers for the Super 14 games to expose the new and raw talent. Imagine high level and new talent as curtain raisers for Super 14 matches, it will bring more crowds to these matches. Young talent will no doubt arise from this series, as one could have seen from the previous Varsity Cup, and with a person in the frame of Francois Pienaar in charge, it will be a huge success, take one player as an example by the name of Joe Pietersen, who was brilliant in the previous Varsity Cup. After this competition and the Super 14, the aim then should be focused on the Currie Cup, and bringing back the "B" sides of the respected Provinces, so players from the Varsity Cup/Club Championships competition can be picked for the various Provinces’ B side, to even more develop their talent. Again, these games will be played as curtain raisers and expose our talent we have. Former A side players and players who can’t make the A side will add experience and flair to this B side competition. For instance, now that Gary Botha returns to S.A, he must play 3 games in for the B side of the Blue Bulls, before he can be eligible for the A side of the Blue Bulls. By doing this, we would not need any contracted overseas player, and if any province wants to sign a overseas player, that player must play 3 games for the respective provinces’ B side as well, before he can be chosen for the A side. With the talent that will come from these 2 competitions, no one would want or need to sign overseas players anymore, just take Juan de Jongh as an example...what a player... and out of nowhere.
Pieter (Sharks for life are chokers)10/1/2009 8:51 AM
I agree with Pieter that players not in South Africa should not be considered for Springboks, it is/should be the same sentiment for the Sharks and WP, why do they have to commit treason against South African players, importing oversees players, especially flyhalfs, when there are plenty SA talent available to slot in those positions in what is supposed to be a domestic series??

Of course Helium want to see Pienaar at flyhalf and not scrumhalf. That way he can make way for that prop Januarie in the team. Pathetic!!!

Pienaar, we've got a spot for you at the Lions at Flyhalf where I promise you will get loads of action. Please come and help us out!!
Jeff Aucamp10/1/2009 8:08 AM
Morne is streets ahead of Ruan in all aspects, not just kicking.Ruan is a scrumhalf,a very good one.Defnitely in the top 5 in SA.
David10/1/2009 7:44 AM
I cannot believe that they (he) keeps on looking for excuses to get rid of Morne. As far as he and all papers in SA are concerned, Steyn can only goal kick. I would like to see the stats on how many (average per game) backline tries have been scored where other flyhalves played, after the same number of games that Morne played vs he's average. And then taking 37 players on tour - sounds like a lekker soustrein.
