Stormers dominate Bok squad

Cape Town - The Stormers boast the most players in the first Springbok squad of the year named by new coach Allister Coetzee.

Coetzee on Saturday named a 31-man squad for the upcoming three-Test series against Ireland in June.

The Stormers have not exactly set the world alight with their performances in Super Rugby this year, but it was still enough for nine of their players to crack the nod in Coetzee’s squad.

The Lions, currently South Africa’s best team, have seven players in the squad, followed by the Sharks (6 players), Bulls (5) and Cheetahs (1).

There are also three overseas-based players in Duane Vermeulen (Toulon, France), Steven Kitshoff (Bordeaux, France) and Francois Louw (Bath, England).

The Springboks play Ireland in Cape Town (June 11), Johannesburg (June 18) and Port Elizabeth (June 25).

Springbok squad:

Forwards (17): Pieter-Steph du Toit, Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi, Frans Malherbe, Bongi Mbonambi, Sikhumbuzo Notshe, Scarra Ntubeni (Stormers), Jaco Kriel, Julian Redelinghuys, Warren Whiteley (Lions), Trevor Nyakane, Adriaan Strauss (Bulls), Lood de Jager (Cheetahs), Steven Kitshoff (Bordeaux/FRA), Francois Louw (Bath/ENG), Tendai Mtawarira (Sharks), Duane Vermeulen (Toulon/FRA)

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
