STATS: How Coetzee's tenure stacks up

Cape Town - Following Friday's confirmation that Allister Coetzee has been relieved of his duties as Springbok coach, a look at his final stats in charge - when compared to previous national coaches since isolation - makes for interesting reading.

Having originally been appointed for a four-year contract, Coetzee's time at the helm lasted half of that - or 25 Tests in charge.

Of those 25 matches, the Boks won 11, lost 12 and drew 2, which translates into a 44% win-record.

That gives Coetzee the FOURTH worst record of the 12 national coaches who have taken up the role since readmission back in 1992.

It is worth noting that all three of the coaches with a worse win-% than Coetzee had fewer Tests in charge of the Boks.

John Williams, with a 20% win record, has the worst record, having won just one of the five Tests he took charge of in 1992.

Ian McIntosh fared slightly better, winning four of his 12 Tests between 1993 and 1994 (33%), while Carel du Plessis only won three of eight Tests in 1997 (38%).

The late Kitch Christie remains the Boks' most successful coach, having won all 14 of the Tests in which he was in charge of in the memorable 1995 season, which saw the Springboks win the Rugby World Cup on home soil.

Nick Mallett (71%), Jake White and Heyneke Meyer (both 67%) also boasts respectable records, as does Pieter de Villiers (63%)

Record of Springbok coaches since isolation:

John Williams - 1992: Played 5, won 1, lost 4 - 20% win-record
Gerrie Sonnekus - 1993: did not take up position
Ian McIntosh - 1993-1994: Played 12, won 4, lost 6, drawn 2 - 33% win-record

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
