It's overtime for the Boks

Cape Town - The Springboks will spend an extra 20 minutes after each training session working on their defensive and kicking skills, coach Allister Coetzee has revealed.

Coetzee told Netwerk24 the players also needed to take responsibility in sharpening their skills.

"It's not just going to be the responsibility of the coaches to improve the skills of the players, but also the players. They must have the desire to want to be better and improve," Coetzee said.

According to Coetzee, defence and tactical kicking is areas of the game that needs the most attention. That is why Lions defence specialist JP Ferreira and kicking coach Louis Koen have been added to South Africa's coaching staff.

Coetzee admitted the tactical kicking was far from the desired level it needed to be as the Boks were guilty of too many aimless kicks that weren't chased properly, which means no pressure was being put on the opposition.

The Bok coach said Ferreira's role would be assessed after the end-of-year tour to decide whether his involvement would be prolonged to next year.

"For now JP is only involved for the November tour, but we'll make a call afterwards. That is why it's necessary to work together in the best interest of South African rugby," Coetzee added.

"We have to leave our ego's aside. For too long everyone just acted in their own interest. Hopefully we can make an arrangement with the Lions should it be decided that JP's services can be beneficial to the Boks beyond this season.

"I believe it will be in everyone's best interest."
