Cape Town - SA Rugby is reportedly looking at the possibility of signing a deal with Brendan Venter to become Springbok assistant coach.

Afrikaans newspaper Rapport reported on Sunday that Venter may be pursued to assist Allister Coetzee - who appears likely to stay on as Springbok coach.

Coetzee will on Tuesday get a chance to explain to SA Rugby’s high performance committee why he should remain in his post.

The weekly newspaper is reporting that it’s unlikely that Coetzee will get the sack as it would cost SA Rugby in the region of R13m to fire him.

The plan is reportedly now to try and get Venter as Coetzee’s assistant.

Attaining the services of Venter on a full-time basis may prove troublesome though.

The former Springbok centre runs a medical practice in Strand and in recent times only helped out with rugby matters on a consultancy basis.

He was the leader of SA Rugby’s first indaba in October and also helped Italy as defence coach during the November Test window - when they upset the Springboks 20-18 in Florence.
