Cape Town - Ireland have had success against the Springboks in recent years, but they are yet to win a Test against the Boks on South African shores.
Overall, the two nations have faced each other in 22 Tests, with South Africa boasting a 16-5 win-loss ratio, with one match ending in a draw.
Ireland though will take heart from the fact that they have won four of the last six Tests played between the nations.
The last time the teams met was in Dublin in 2014, when Ireland comfortably won 29-15.
But the Irish have found the going tough in South Africa over the years, with the Springboks having won all seven encounters in South Africa.
Ireland will also be sending an injury depleted squad to South Africa which makes it all the more likely that the status quo will remain after the three-Test series, which starts in Cape Town on Saturday.
It will be followed by Tests in Johannesburg (June 18) and Port Elizabeth (June 25).
