Vermeulen on the mend

Dublin - As the Springboks assess their stock ahead of their Test against Ireland, they will be boosted by the return of Duane Vermeulen.

The supersport.com website reports that Duane Vermeulen is expected to train with the team this week after sitting out the training sessions in Johannesburg before the squad’s departure because of what Roberts described as a muscular tweak on the opposite side of his body to where he suffered the rib injury that nearly prevented him from facing the All Blacks in Johannesburg last month.

"Duane has responded well to treatment and we are expecting him to resume training.

"It has been great to have the guys out of the Currie Cup this year.

"We topped up on our fitness in the training camp in Stellenbosch and again during the time in Johannesburg before we left on tour.

"I am happy with where we are," said Roberts.

"All the guys here are fit, but of course we also do have a lot of players that we left behind because of injuries.

"We have about a 20% injury rate at the moment, which is normal for a rugby squad."
