Cape Town - Frans Steyn would have been among the Top 5 best paid rugby players on the planet had he opted to stay in France two years ago.

Steyn, 27, shocked the rugby fraternity on Tuesday when he pulled of out the Boks' Incoming Series in June.

It has since emerged that Steyn pulled out due to a dispute over money with the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

His father, Piet Steyn, said SARU did not adhere to a contractual promise they had made to his son. The monetary promise was made by SARU before Steyn returned from French club, Racing Metro, to play for the Sharks in 2012.

According to Thursday's Die Burger, Steyn would have earned between R8m and R9m per year if he stayed at Racing Metro - which would have put him in the Top 5 global list.

Interestingly, the world's Top 10 best paid rugby players all play in France, with two South Africans - Bryan Habana and Bakkies Botha - in the current Top 10.
