Matfield: Pick only local Boks

Cape Town - Retired Springbok lock Victor Matfield says the new Bok coach should in future not pick overseas-based players for the team.

WIN a Signed Springbok RWC Jersey

Peter de Villers picked his fair share of players who plied their trade overseas during his four-year stint in charge of the national team. Frans Steyn (Racing Metro), Ruan Pienaar (Ulster), CJ van der Linde (Leinster), Joe van Niekerk (Toulon), Johann Muller (Ulster) and Gerhard Mostert (Stade Francais) were all players called up to play for South Africa while playing their rugby in the Northern Hemisphere.

De Villiers was, however, inconsistent with his decisions as he asked Matfield (Toulon) and captain John Smit (Clermont) to come back to play in South Arica.

And Matfield believes that should also be the way forward for the next coach.

"There has to be an incentive for guys not opting to go that (overseas) route. Players who want to go overseas would have to know that they are giving up the chance of playing in the Springbok jersey," Matfield told the Rapport newspaper.

"It would make it worthwhile for the local guy not going overseas for big money, but then to earn an additional income as a Springbok player."

Smit (Saracens), Francois Louw (Bath), Gurthro Steenkamp (Toulouse), Jaque Fourie (Wild Knights), Fourie du Peez and Danie Rossouw (Suntory Sungoliath) are some of the World Cup Boks playing their rugby abroad.
