Cape Town - Forgotten Springbok Marco Wentzel has been put on stand-by should any of the Springbok locks get injured on their European tour.

Coach Heyneke Meyer said on Wednesday that he considered picking veteran Bakkies Botha but decided against it as he feels Botha should only be called up if he's assured of a starting role.

Hence, Meyer opted to put Wentzel, who currently plays for English club London Wasps, on stand-by.

The 33-year-old Wentzel played two Tests for the Springboks back in 2002, and is considered a bit of a journeyman.

He represented the Bulls (2001-02), and Cats (2003) in Super Rugby and also played first class rugby for the Pumas, Free State Cheetahs, Boland and Border. In 2007 he joined the Leicester Tigers in England and moved to Leeds Carnegie two years later, while starting his current stint at Wasps in 2011.

The Boks fly to Europe on Saturday and play Ireland on November 10 in Dublin, Scotland a week later in Edinburgh before concluding their tour against England in London on November 24.
