Louw or Strauss to lead Boks?

Cape Town - Adriaan Strauss and Francois Louw appear to be the frontrunners to lead the Springboks against Samoa if regular captain Jean de Villiers doesn't recover from injury, reports the Cape Times.

De Villiers injured his right sternoclavicular joint and second rib early in last weekend’s 30-17 victory over Scotland in Nelspruit.

Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts said De Villiers was unable to train on Monday and will be assessed in the coming days to determine his availability for Saturday's clash at Loftus Versfeld.

Coach Heyneke Meyer is already thinking about a possible future captain, with the names of Strauss and Louw prominently touted, according to the newspaper.

"Jean has played a lot of rugby and he probably should have come off in the game. If he is not hundred percent fit he will not play," said Meyer.

"A year in rugby is a long time. This time last year I was very worried with leadership with a lot of quality leaders moving on in South African rugby. Suddenly there are a lot of guys putting up their hands. I have a lot of confidence in Adriaan, Bismarck (du Plessis) can lead, Pierre (Spies) as well, and Bryan (Habana) is taking the lead as a senior player as well.

"I'm happy with a guy like Francois Louw, who has captained Bath and is a quality player and leader as well," continued Meyer.

The clash at Loftus kicks off at 17:15 on Saturday, with Meyer expected to name his team on Wednesday.
