Lions prop eager to boost Boks

Cape Town - Golden Lions tighthead prop Julian Redelinghuys hopes his passion for scrummaging will see him make a valuable contribution to the Springbok squad during the tour to Europe.

When contacted by MyPlayers.co.za on Monday afternoon, the 25-year-old was in line at the UK Embassy in Johannesburg, sorting out his paperwork ahead of the Springbok tour to Europe.

“It’s all very exciting,” said Redelinghuys. “I’ve had to sort out my passport requirements over the past few days. It’s been a bit of a rush, but everything will be sorted. I’m very excited to join the Springbok squad.”

The Golden Lions scrum was a notable force during the Currie Cup, and Redelinghuys has been one of the players (along with hooker Robbie Coetzee) rewarded for consistent form this season.

“It’s been a team effort,” said Redelinghuys. “Coach Akkers (Johan Ackermann) has instilled a passion for scrumming within the Lions squad. That has been the main reason why we’ve done so well. Even the flanks are enjoying the scrumming sessions!

“All of the front-rowers have done well during the season. Everybody has played their part. It’s great that our hard work has been noticed.”

Redelinghuys hopes he can make a contribution at the scrums during his time with the Springboks.

“Many people criticised the Springbok scrum when the team played Argentina, but the guys really improved against Australia and New Zealand. They deserve credit for that,” said Redelinghuys. “I will contribute wherever and whenever I’m needed.

“I’m looking forward to working with the likes of Jannie (du Plessis), Bismarck (du Plessis) and Tendai (Mtawarira) again. I worked with them during my time at the Sharks, so it will be a good reunion.

“I’m also looking forward to learning new things from the coaches, like Heyneke Meyer and Johann van Graan, and playing and training alongside the likes of Victor Matfield and Schalk Burger, who I have watched ever since I was a kid. I hope to gain valuable experience during the tour.”

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
