Former Bok attacked, robbed

Port Alfred - Two men were arrested on Tuesday for the robbery and attack on three fishermen, including former Springbok Gerhardus Sonnekus, in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape police said.

"After following leads, Port Alfred detectives in collaboration with crime intelligence officers, arrested two men aged 34 in Nemato Township in the early hours of Tuesday morning," police spokesperson Luvuyo Mjekula said.

"Police are looking to make more arrests as two more suspects are still at large."

At 22:00 on Saturday night, four men entered the holiday home in Anglers Way through a sliding door.

They allegedly tied up Sonnekus, 61, Bernadus Lambertus Zaaiman, 63, and Andre Cleghorn, 60, and attacked them before fleeing with cellphones, alcohol, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

"The victims sustained physical injuries, including stab wounds," said Mjekula.

Sonnekus and Zaaiman were taken to hospital but have been discharged, he said.

Free State native Sonnekus played 3 Tests for the Springboks (two at No 8 and one at scrumhalf) between 1974 and 1984, scoring one try.
