Cape Town - Fourie du Preez is apparently the favourite to take over the Springbok captaincy from John Smit.
Even though new Bok coach, Heyneke Meyer, said at his appointment last week that a new captain is still far from his thoughts, Rapport was reliably informed that Meyer has Du Preez firmly in his sights to lead the national side.
Du Preez, a former Blue Bull scrumhalf with 62 Test caps behind his name, currently plays his rugby in Japan.
Rapport’s sources state that Meyer and the South African Rugby Union (SARU) will try and lure Du Preez back to play his rugby in South Africa.
However, Du Preez is apparently not viewed as a permanent candidate to lead the Boks to the 2015 World Cup, but more a short-term option to try and get Springbok rugby back on track.
Should SARU and Meyer fail in their attempts to lure the scrumhalf back from Japan, Schalk Burger is probably next in line for captain.
The Stormers captain and flank impressed with his leadership during last year’s unsuccessful World Cup campaign.
