Win wouldn't erase World Cup misery - Cole

London - England prop Dan Cole claims battering Wales in a potential Six Nations title decider still wouldn't make up for the shattering loss that ruined their World Cup campaign.

England were beaten 28-25 by Warren Gatland's men in last year's World Cup and never recovered as they slumped to an embarrassing pool stage exit on home soil.

Wales return to Twickenham on March 12 and while Cole insists his team are heading in the right direction under new head coach Eddie Jones, he doesn't believe victory in the Six Nations could avenge the World Cup woe.

"After what happened at the World Cup, there is no win now that could make amends for what happened then," Cole said on Wednesday.

"That night against Wales wasn't a great evening or memory in the World Cup.

"We don't talk about what's happened before because Eddie isn't interested in that. It's a new regime that's looking forwards not backwards.

"We have new coaches and for us Eddie's reign started the week before Scotland, so it doesn't really go any further back than that.

"We've got to keep improving. We've played fairly well in the tournament so far. We have to keep evolving, moving forward and keep getting better."

England have enjoyed Six Nations victories over Scotland, Italy and Ireland and could snatch the title a round early if they beat the Welsh on Saturday week and Scotland topple France.

"We've done fairly reasonably so far. We've won each match and have improved on the previous one," Cole said.

"Our attack took a step forward against Ireland. We've been together for four or five weeks and it's only going to get better.

"Defence is fairly straightforward, but there are so many moving parts to the attack.

"It's one of the harder parts to master. We've left tries on the field, but it's got better game on game."
