England sweat on Tindall

London - England captain Mike Tindall is battling to be fit for his team's Grand Slam decider against Ireland after suffering ankle ligament damage in Sunday's win over Scotland.

Tindall, who was replaced at half-time in the Calcutta Cup win at Twickenham, sustained strained ligaments in his left ankle, the Rugby Football Union confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old centre will undergo treatment from England medics ahead of Martin Johnson's team announcement on Thursday.

If Tindall is ruled out of the trip he is likely to be replaced by Bath's Matt Banahan, with number eight Nick Easter likely to be handed the captaincy.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
