Tietjens holds off on future talks

Cape Town - New Zealand Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens will make a call on his future until after a review of their disappointing Olympics campaign has been completed.

Tietjens contract has expired but he first wants to work with New Zealand Rugby and the New Zealand Olympic Committee before he decides his future.

New Zealand under performed dramatically at the Rio Olympics by failing to win a medal after losing 12-7 to Fiji in the quarter-final.

They also suffered an shock defeat to Japan in the pool stage as well as going down to Great Britain, meaning they only won one of four games.

"I am certainly not going to be making any comment around that as we speak," Tietjens told stuff.co.nz in reference to his future with the team.

"But I have been involved in sevens rugby for 22 years. Like everyone else I am really disappointed in the result.

"My team gave it everything and so did the management team. When you reflect back, would you have done things differently? That will be tabled in the review and hopefully leads to a more successful campaign when it comes to the Olympics in 2020."

In addition to not having access to a number of high-profile All Blacks, who for varying reasons opted not to commit to the Olympics, Tietjens felt his team wasn't helped by NZ Rugby not committing to the centralised programmes that have proved successful for other countries.
