Forbes steps down as NZ Sevens skipper

Wellington - DJ Forbes says he is stepping down as captain of the New Zealand Sevens team after nine years in the role, a year ahead of the sport's debut at the Rio de Janiero Olympic Games.

The 32-year-old said he decided to resign from the role after discussions with long-time coach Gordon Tietjens.

Forbes said "by stepping aside from the responsibilities of captain I can focus solely on what I need to do to get in the best shape mentally and physically. (Tietjens) and I agree this is the best way to get me to the Olympics."

Tietjens said Forbes had been a wonderful captain "and still has much to offer the team."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
