Blitzbokke off to fast start

George - The Springbok Sevens squad made a perfect start to the Emirates Airline George Sevens tournament on Friday by racing to an impressive 38-0 victory over Portugal.

It did not take the local favourites long to find their rhythm and when Bernado Botha dived over for his team’s first five-pointer of the tournament, the tries started coming fast and frequently.

The Springboks dominated proceedings with tries by skipper Kyle Brown, Pieter Engelbrecht and Cecil Afrika, and had a 26-0 lead at halftime.

What would have impressed coach Paul Treu even more than the scoreline was how accurately Afrika was kicking at goal.

With the handy lead in place, Treu was able to rest some of his men in the second half, but that did not stop the team from dominating their opponents.

South Africa next face Zimbabwe in their pool D at 4.55pm.

Scorers:

Springboks
38(26): Tries: Bernado Botha, Kyle Brown (2), Cecil Afrika, Pieter Engelbrecht, Paul Delport. Conversions: Afrika (3)

Portugal: 0(0)

The Blitzbokke will play other Pool D teams Zimbabwe (16:55) and Argentina (20:38) later on Friday.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
