Johannesburg - The Springbok Sevens were held to a 19-all draw with Scotland in their second match of the IRB Sevens Series in Dubai on Friday.
The Springbok Sevens looked the better side for most of the match, but Scotland fought back courageously with Peter Horne scoring the equalising try seconds from the final whistle.
Fortunately for the Boks, Andrew Skeen missed the relatively easy conversion and the scores stayed level.
The match started off with South African Sevens player-of-the-year Kyle Brown scoring a brace in the first half to give the team a 12-0 lead.
They remained in control for most of the first period and will be disappointed at letting the Scots back in the match after the siren for the break sounded. Fraser Harkness scored on the whistle.
Only five points separated the sides as the second half got underway.
After the break, Cecil Afrika added five more when he finished from close range in a period where the young Boks kept the ball well.
He also converted and once again the Boks had their noses in front.
Defence and some poor tactical decisions let them down and eventually Scotland’s dominance in possession resulted in two tries to deny the Boks victory.
The draw followed their hard-fought 19-10 victory earlier in the day over a rejuvenated Russian outfit.
The Springboks face pool favourites Australia in their final match of the day.
Scorers:
Springboks 19 (12). Tries: Kyle Brown (2) Cecil Afrika. Conversion: Afrika (2)
Scotland 19 (7). Tries: Fraser Harkness, Dougie Fife, Peter Horne. Conversions: Horne, Andrew Skeen.
