Blitzbokke down Australia

Herman Mostert

Cape Town - The Blitzbokke have rounded off a solid day's play at the HSBC World Sevens Series in Edinburgh with a 19-5 mauling of Australia.

South Africa led 5-0 at halftime, after a Cecil Afrika try.

Paul Delport and William Small-Smith scored in the second half, as Afrika slotted two conversions to take the Blitzbokke into an unassailable 19-0 lead.

Greg Jeloudev scored a consolation try for the Aussies at the death.

The Blitzbokke finished day one unbeaten to qualify for tomorrow's play-offs where they will face Samoa in one of the four quarter-final matches at Murrayfield.

However, they paid a heavy price for their success. They lost influential scrumhalf Branco du Preez in their first match against Canada(sprained ligaments, ankle), while veteran Neil Powell also had to leave the field against Australia after suffering a rib injury.

This season New Zealand have won four of the seven Cup titles on offer, South Africa two and England one.

The Cup quarterfinal draw for Sunday at Murrayfield is:

New Zealand vs. England
Fiji vs. Australia
South Africa vs. Samoa
Wales vs. France

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
