South Africa won 17-5, after leading 12-0 at half-time.

The South Africans started like a house on fire, camping on the Australian line in the early exchanges and were duly rewarded when Chris Dry went over under the posts for his seventh try of the tournament. Renfred Dazel converted for a 7-0 lead.

The Blitzbokke suffered a blow midway through the first half when Bernardo Botha was yellow carded for a high tackle. However, it didn't cost them as the Australians were unable to make use of their numerical advantage.

Paul Delport then crashed over in the corner just before the break to put South Africa 12-0 up.

Australia came out firing in the second half, dominating the possession stakes early on and pressurising the Blitzbokke's line. But the South Africans' resolute defence held firm, eventually forcing the home team into errors to regain some ball and field possession.

Boom Prinsloo grabbed the first chance South Africa got in the second half when he scored in the corner with a minute remaining to seal the game. Deyzel missed the conversion but South Africans were now 17-0 up.

Twenty-one-year-old substitute Pama Fou gave the home fans something to cheer when he scored in the corner after the hooter had sounded.

This match was the first ever 3rd/4th place playoff in the Sevens World Series's history, with the Blitzbokke claiming 17 vital series points to Australia's 15.

New Zealand will next meet Fiji in the Cup final.
