7’sPL ready to rock George

Johannesburg - An exciting new sevens rugby tournament, named 7’sPL, will hit Outeniqua Park, George on December 14 and 15 this year, it was announced in the Southern Cape town.

The announcement was made official on Tuesday after Sport24 reported about the event on Sunday.

The tournament, with prize money of R1 million, will be run by the South-Western Districts Rugby Union (SWDRU) and in conjunction with Willem Strauss Sports Promotions.

The SA Rugby Union (SARU) granted permission in 2011 through its Games and Competitions Committee for the hosting of a Sevens Tournament in George.

Twelve teams will participate in the competition.

SWD president Hennie Baartman said at the announcement of the tournament that the competition would add value to the region.

“We have a responsibility to our community to work hard and create opportunities,” Baartman said.

“This tournament fits that bill perfectly. We still have the capacity and people to host an event of this magnitude.”

This will bring stability to the SWDRU and allow locals much needed top flight rugby, he said.

Baartman added that the competition would also provide and economic boost to the region.

“The whole region suffered when the International Rugby Board World Series was moved from George and in talks with SARU, provincial government, local municipalities and the business community all confirmed that we need something to replace it,” he said.

Sports promoter Strauss, who is well known in organising big rugby events, was tasked by the SWD to run the event.

Strauss said George was the logical choice as a venue and sevens the perfect code to kick-start this new concept.

“George hosted the IRB tournament successfully for many years and has the infrastructure and ability to do something similar,” Strauss said.

“The date of the tournament will also suit the region perfectly as the Southern Cape will be awash with tourists from all over the country.”
