Saru makes emblem choice

Cape Town -  The South African Rugby Union (Saru) have taken a decision to recognise the Protea as the national emblem and move the Springbok off the heart of the national rugby jersey.

Afrikaans newspaper Sondag reported that Saru took the decision at a President's Council meeting recently , but did not announce it as they wanted to communicate the decision in a discussion with Sports Minister Makhenkhesi Stofile.

Saru decided at the extraordinary meeting that they recognised the need for the King Protea to be on the World Champions' jerseys as the national emblem.

But the team will still be known as the Springboks and the Springbok emblem will be emblazoned on the right side of the jersey in future.
However, the organisation decided to request a meeting with Stofile to sort out logistical issues, the newspaper said, as the pending Sports Act stipulates that no emblem may be bigger than the national emblem on any sporting jersey.

Springbok issue

This would mean that the Protea would be bigger than the Springbok on the national rugby jersey. There was also uncertainty as to how this pertained to the sponsor's logos on the jersey, the newspaper added.

Saru President Oregan Hoskins confirmed the Springbok issue was discussed by the Presidents Council.

"We discussed the matter and we now need to have a discussion with the Sports Minister.

“We don’t want to make any announcements before we have talked to him.”

The old jersey may still be in play until after the British and Irish Lions tour, the newspaper added, as the orders for national jerseys are nine months in advance and any change would take that long to implement.

At least the Sprinkbok emblem is staying... I will proudly support the team until they remove it from the jersey... I'm a white South African.... Proud to be one... at least we don't make silly decisions like blacks

I wish South Africa the best. SA is so deeply a part of me that it is disturbing when I see trivial issues like the springbok emblem taking centre stage when there are so many more major issues that need more immediate attention. I'm not even talking about political corruption or our country's crime right. Those need addressing obviously, but right now the entire planet is on the precipice of economic uncertainty... in we're flushing away millions on name changes. I'm not against name changes of obvious apartheid protagonists, but trying to wipe out all memory of all white history will not create unity in a country that so desperately needs it. I'm married to a Canadian girl and we live in BC. I have continued to celebrate my SA roots, because that is so important to me. I have paid for all the big games on TV... but this continuous political drivel is clouding the game and sucking any enjoyment out of it for me. I think it's time I learned to understand ice-hockey!

"Hier kom die blomme, hier kom die blomme..." Dis so stupid, en die ergste is - dat daar geen pille vir dit is nie.

Thank you, thank you, thank you... oh thank you Stofile, thank you Khompela, thank you Frolic and Watson and all the rest of the liberal nitwits in this country. Thank you for demeaning white, and especially Afrikaner culture. For years we've been struggling to get the Afrikaner to see the farce of so-called reconciliation for what it is. And now you do our work for us. I beg you, get rid of the Springbok altogether. Get rid of every white rugby player in the national team and every white administrator in the organization. The quicker you do it, the sooner the Afrikaner will wake up to the fact that we are considered surplus to requirements in this country and that there remains one, and one only, course of action open to us - to go it alone. So we will withdraw our taxes, lop off a sizable region of this country, start our own republic, and when the imbeciles have run the remainder of the country into the ground - as inevitably they must - and when they come crawling and begging - as undoubtedly they will - we will take control of the whole shooting match again. Carry on Stofile - you're making our task so much easier.

LOL @ the comments from the anonymous users..... Get real everything is not about you, and by the way , Bafana Bafana use the Protea... They will always be the Springboks to everybody so it's not a big deal if its on the left/right of the shirt and the same if it was gone, it's still the national team under any logo, country before logo

Bunch of twats just keep wasting money Since when do men in cheap suits change the way we view sport. Our nation is stronger than this - and as long as I am able - I will love this country @ Springbok fan - can I have your house in case it does not get burned down ?

This is ridiculous!! This is the only country in the world where politics will meddle in with the sporting portfolio! Where is the opposition party opposing this ? DA Wake up!!! Supersport / Sasol / DSTV / ANC you've lost a supporter & a customer!

As an dual passport holding Englishman that is a South African by choice, I find this whole thing mind boggling. England has got by for centuries without a 'National Emblem'. The Rugby team wear a red rose and the cricket team wear 3 lions, and nobody, least of all the government, has ever suggested that either of them is wrong or unpatriotic for any reason. If any UK government tried in interfere in the running of the Rugby Union, the Football Association or the England and Wales Cricket Board, they would soon be out of office. None of this is anything to do with politicians. Voting South Africans should tell this government to keep its nose out of sports affairs and try to run the parts of the country that it is responsible for. A task that they are obviously incapable of doing.

Cannot believe it. Everything that has a connotation to white has to go. Must I flee into the sea as well because my skin is white? So much for reconciliation. So much for a rainbow nation. All that has a black history is being glorified. All that has a sprinkle of white history in it gets crushed. So much for the most democratic country in the world. So much for freedom of expression. So much for a future in SA. Are they going to change the provincial emblems that has a white connotation. No. Are they going to change their cannibalistic ways?. No. Time to hit the road and watch the house burn from a safe distance.

Why has there been no public involvement with this? This is completely unacceptable - this Hoskins character seems to be as incompetent as all those before them. The 'presidents' council is outdated and rugby administration needs a whole new revamp - with all current incumbents sent packing into the wilderness...

Anonymous user- If you think that soccer is a "black sport" then you are stupid and ignorant. You probably still think rugby is a "white sport".It is people like you who give the Springbok it's dark side. I think to YOU it still represents the "old days" when rugby was a "white sport". Those days are over my friend and if you can't realise that maybe a change in the emblem will remind you that this is the New South Africa.
Simplicist11/3/2008 10:10 AM
What is all the whining about? The fact is this is the SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY TEAM we're talking about and they have to wear the National Emblem, whatever it is. I'm a big Bokke fan and I identify with the Springbok logo, but it hasn't been lost, it's merely shifting to the right. Let's all get over it.
Anonymous User11/3/2008 10:07 AM
So will the Bafana Bafana team also start wearing the Protea, or are they excempt because it is a black sport?
Johan11/3/2008 9:19 AM
The Blue Bulls (curry cup team) has a daisy on their jersey, but no one calls them the daisies....
Anonymous User11/3/2008 9:18 AM
@ Nicole, ya sure africa is better than it was, less crime, less corruption...nottttt. I had my point of view said. Surely the one that can't except others point of view could be consider morons.
Anonymous User11/3/2008 8:29 AM
There goes democracy. And a Springbok supporter (me)...
REALIST11/3/2008 7:59 AM
Why not wear the Proteas on the back of the shorts. There it will be most visible as we are going to see our arses against the Lions next year. Springbok rugby died long ago when the game went professional so use any symbol or jersey, it no longer matters.
Nicole11/3/2008 7:44 AM
@ anonymous user, wow no name what a hero. Actually hatred is coming down on morons like you. Fine we can leave you to "your" africa and you can ruin it like you have everything else. You are a fool, I hope SARU realises that by playing Stofile's game they have isolated most of their true fans. And to all those who feel like they have won some kind of victory here, I assure you you haven't won anything we will still be there at the games regardless.
Anonymous User11/3/2008 7:08 AM
I don't understand why people is so much against everything that has a afrikaner background. The springbok emblem comes from the afrikaner background, the afrikaans street names is being called to tribe and freedom fighters, afrikaans in schools are being minimized to become more parallel english schools. I'm a soutie but do really think why is it only the white south african that is getting it from the government, specially the afrikaner white people. A changing the emblem is just going to bring more hatred into hearts....is that your manner of revenge! You call your self freedom fighters...uhhhhhh!!
Niki11/3/2008 6:49 AM
What they're telling fans and sponsors is, "In spite of what we said we don't like you and give a damn what you think, but we want your money."
phillie11/3/2008 1:07 AM
I wonder why Oregan does not just pacify cheeky and puke even more by discarding the protea and substituting it with a watsonia flower Then he can be the hero he is trying so hard to be for the ANC
jacobus11/2/2008 10:49 PM
Daar gaan my subskripsie vir M-Net. Ek het dit net vir rugby gebruik en nou het die politici die besluit namens my geneem. Waar het jy nou al gehoor dat 'n blom kan rugby speel?
clint11/2/2008 10:20 PM
Take away them emblem, give us a useless coach and even more useless 10. Awesome job guys, rugby is going to go the same way as everything else in SA. Congratulations on a sterling performance.
Anonymous User11/2/2008 10:17 PM
Whatever they want, they'll eventually get. So sad.
Annoyed11/2/2008 10:06 PM
I hope they all get a life soon. Why don't the Springboks decide?
Anonymous User11/2/2008 10:01 PM
To all "European dogs" convert your possessions to gold and diamonds to smuggle it out of SA. "You" are no longer welcome. Please immigrate rather early compared to late - the currency will dive as capital leaves to country. If you snooze don't cry, you can clearly see the hatred from Africa spiraling down on you! Mandela embraced your gifts, but Africa still hates the "package" (long forgotten) it came with.
