SBW confirms Crusaders move

Wellington - Former rugby league star Sonny Bill Williams has confirmed he will join the Crusaders for next year's revamped Super 15 competition.

Williams, who played league for the Sydney-based Bulldogs and was capped by New Zealand, confirmed earlier this month a return to New Zealand with the aim of making the All Blacks squad for next year's Rugby World Cup.

On Wednesday he said he would take to the field for Canterbury in the domestic league as well as for the Crusaders in next year's Super 15.

Crusaders' coach Todd Blackadder welcomed the commitment of 24-year-old Williams, who left the Bulldogs to switch codes in 2008 and join French rugby union side Toulon.

"We're confident we can help in his development and we're sure he will add a lot to our game," Blackadder said.

"Sonny Bill is a humble and down-to-earth guy and I know he has a very professional approach."

Williams's New Zealand provincial rugby career is expected to start on July 30 when Canterbury play Hawke's Bay in Christchurch.
