Johannesburg - The South African Rugby Union delivered its bid to host either the 2015 or 2019 Rugby World Cup to Rugby World Cup Limited in Dublin on Thursday.

SARU president, Oregan Hoskins, announced at a media conference in Johannesburg that positive discussions with Government had seen the last brick fall into place.

“The Government has been very supportive and they have provided the financial backing to allow us to complete what we believe is a compelling case to bring the Rugby World Cup back home,” said Hoskins. “South Africa in this day and age is set up to host the very biggest global sporting events and we believe we would offer Rugby an unrivalled showcase for the game.

“Players, spectators and media would enjoy world-class facilities in purpose-built stadia; our financial model and time zoning would maximise commercial revenues and we’re a rugby-hungry country that can promise ideal playing conditions at a time of year when the Rugby World Cup would be the only sports event in the national imagination.”

World Cup-winning captain John Smit and former IRB Player of the Year Bryan Habana have joined other leading South Africans who are acting as ambassadors for the Bid.

“The Rugby World Cup is special to me and to all South Africans – and not just because I played in a winning team,” said Habana. “The 1995 Rugby World Cup was a magical time in South Africa’s national life and I believe that if it were to return here we’d provide the stage to create even more special memories – both for South Africa and world Rugby.”

Mark Alexander, Bid Committee chairperson and SARU deputy president, said the newly-refurbished 90 000-capcity Soccer City in Johannesburg would be the venue for the opening and final matches of any South African Rugby World Cup and other new stadiums, as well as existing rugby stadiums, would be used.

“South Africa is spending billions on upgrading our infrastructure and on venues to host the FIFA World Cup next year and the legacy of that tournament offers rugby an incredible opportunity to put on a spectacular tournament in ideal conditions,” said Alexander.

“Government has backed us every step of the way in our discussions with them and both the financial and logistical support they offer would allow a hugely successful commercial tournament to be held without any problems.

“Rugby must publicly thank our Government and particularly the sports minister Makhenkesi Stofile and his department for their unstinting help in producing this Bid.”

Also attending the launch were Dr Ali Bacher, Danny Jordaan and Moss Mashishi, who are among a group of Bid Ambassadors who have lent their experience and advice to the Bid.

The South African Rugby Union team will present their Bid to the IRB Council in Dublin on May 13. The announcement of the successful bidders for the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups will be made on July 28.

Leave the Super 14? People just say anything on here it seems. I am not sure why England gets to host so soon as a world cup in France is pretty much at home for the English. Playing the final in 2007 was like a home game for them.

Agreed! And this is just one of the reasons why SA should leave the Super 14 and create their own rugby IP style League as the Rugby Guru in his blog stated. Invest into rugby development at grass root level, get proper rugby scouting to be done, one Craven week does'nt cover this area.Learn from the North. Only my humble opinion.

This is one half of the story. Here's the world body's fee for the priviledge of hosting the tournament: eighty million Pounds, or more than ONE BILLION RAND. That's why only England is bidding for the 2015 Cup, after Australia, Scotland and Ireland pulled out because of cost. I suspect that's the government's 'financial contribution'. Tax payer's money. Who else has this kind of money to invest in times like this? I don't want to sound negative but wonder whether the ROI has been calculated, or is this an ego thing.

We are becoming the best in terms of organisation so just give us the damn rights as to fill our magnificent world class stadia..esp the 90 000 seater, I cant wait !!!!

Rugby does not have to thank Stofile for anything. He has created nothing but trouble for Rugby in SA. He wanted to take the springbok emblem away, there were constant battles with the ex coach Jake White (who helped us win the world cup) etc etc etc.

Great News! The next great news should be that they drop any form of quotas in all our sporting codes. The non-whites have caught up, have equal access to all facilities and teams should from now on be picked on merit. Then we will truly make full the circle of transformation. DROP QUOTAS!!!

Yep...only logical...

Whilst our country has much mor pressing concerns...do think that the return on investment which the soccer worldcup will not make but input costs incurred it may be a solution to at least sooth the blow dealt by a financially irresponsible desire to show the world what Africa can do...we all know that africa and western world are gulfs apart..but hosting the rugby is a different ball game (pardon the pun!) and so we shoud go for it...

I agree fern...we will have had so much exposure to the world that they will be stupid not to give it to us. However with tong in cheek i haev to admit that it would prob go to a Nothern Hemisphere team as it always alternates it would seem.

IPL (short notice), 2010 Soccer, Confed Cup, the list goes on, we are gaining experience and improving our infrustructure all the time. We should definitely be the favourite. As already mentioned, we are a sports crazy country...

no country will be as ready to host as we are. I doubt NZ's puny stadia for 2011 will even compare..
