The Beeld newspaper reports that the Eastern Cape's Sindile Mayende is one of eight SA referees named in the South African Rugby Referees Association's (SARRA) group for the 2012 Super Rugby season.
Mayende, 28, is seen as a candidate for Super Rugby even though he is not on SANZAR's provisional list of referees for the 2012 tournament.
Lourens van der Merwe from Free State and Stuart Berry from KwaZulu-Natal will also get the chance to handle Super Rugby games and are on SANZAR's reserve list for the tournament. Both are part of SARRA's group for the Super Rugby season.
The rest of the referees in the SARRA group - Jaco Peyper, Marius Jonker, Craig Joubert, Jonathan Kaplan and Mark Lawrence - are already on SANZAR's panel for the tournament.
Mayende has pipped Pro Legoete, who refereed in last season's Super Rugby tournament. Legoete is nevertheless still a reserve in SARRA's Super group.
And South Africa's referees' boss, André Watson, believes Mayende is in with a good shot to get a chance in Super Rugby. "If someone like Sindile keeps on performing like this year, the chances are good that he will ref in Super Rugby," said Watson.
