Stellenbosch – The South African Sevens team for the Commonwealth Games in India will have to compete with four Test All Blacks if they want to prevent the New Zealanders from notching a fouth gold medal on 12 October.

Apart from regular Sevens players, the Kiwis’ squad includes All Blacks Zac Guildford, Hosea Gear, Ben Smith and Adam Thomson.

The South African team, which will play with a SASCOC emblem, will be announced next Friday. A training squad convened here this week.

Apart from MJ Mentz, all the senior and contracted players trained on Wednesday. Coach Paul Treu said that Mentz was struggling with an ankle injury.

Treu will therefore be able to send his strongest possible side to New Delhi.

However, there is no guarantee of success at the Commonwealth Games.

“For some or other reason South Africa never does well at such events. Not even with players like Bob Skinstad and Chester Williams were we able to do any more than get a bronze medal at Manchester in 2002.”

Do we really need this side show taking up space and time on our rugby calendar... You can see by the players attitude that even they couldn't be bothered with 7's.. So can't we just drop the hole thing and spend the money on developing the 15 man game.

    Mike you said it all.

What? lol lol lol, thats SA's future--- speedsters, fit less, lazy thought/tactics. SA have NO DEPTH, look at NZ's depth....... Run forest run. KICK AND BE CONQURED. We need to take a leaf out of NZ's book and get our youth ready. Our days are numbered, infact we never even counted apart from our one measily WC. We need to prepare because we are being thrashed from all quarters. Bloody sheep bangers

what are you on about, If you understand why 7's are on the rugby calender you would understand that it forms part of the bigger picture. In order for the game of Rugby to grow 7's need to stay. how many countries that dont play 15's rugby have 7's teams. Think outside you little shack, secondly playing 7's does develop young backline players skills. Finally I dont think that you were moaning about the 7's game when we RSA were the 15's world champs, rank no1 in 7's, tri nations champs, S14 champs AT ONCE.Nobody said anything about the lack of depth in our rugby. So please just Shut the F#$$%K up

So what exactly did our 7's team have to do with any of our 15 man succes. Sweet bugger all chaps! The only players that even play sevens are the guys who can't make a CC side or even a 1st division one, look how 3 of our so called stars dumped 7s to go play for the Kings, not even a CC side. As for these teams that play 7s that don't play 15s, name them please, from what I understand there are far more countries playing 15s then 7s.
