White feels sorry for Div

2011-10-18 14:14

Cape Town – Former Springbok and World Cup winning coach, Jake White has expressed the sympathy he feels for Bok coach, Peter de Villiers after the Boks’ exit last weekend.

“I have a great deal of sympathy for Bok coach Peter de Villiers. The expectations of a nation just add to the heavy load the man had to carry,” White wrote in his column on Rugby XV’s website.

“My feeling is that SA Rugby now need to take time to reflect what happened and not to blame De Villiers for their own failings.

He pointed out that De Villiers never got the support he needed and it played a huge role in whether he would have been successful or not.

White then redirected the blame on the doorstep of SARU, clearly not doing much to help their already strained relationship.

“This World Cup was lost by SA Rugby with the decisions they made four years ago.”

White went onto say that a winning mentality has to be instilled in the next wave of Bok hopefuls as a clean slate has now been handed to them and saluted those who have walked the same shoes he once walked in.

“And as I sit back with a whiskey and soda highball and raise a silent toast to all Springbok coaches, I have to ask myself one prickly question: Why is it the coaches always take the flak?

“Some things do change, but the more they change, the more they stay the same.”

i def. dont feel sorry, im actually quite happy

      Bok - 2011-10-18 20:30

Jake tend to agree however believe there should be a White Coach with more English South Africans in the team they are brighter more of a team player, and adapt much faster on the field than the Afikaans most of whom are just big plodders. With very slow reactions

      Bok - 2011-10-18 20:59

I just love this discussion lets compare the Tactics between the All Blacks and the Proteas in playing the Aussies. The Proteas let Pocock dominate the breakdown. The All Blacks took him out of the game the ran straight at him so he had to tackle them. He then had no way of being effective in the breakdown area which the All Blacks dominated. When a ruck was set up the All Blacks drove through on their feet ,and knocked Pocock out of it he was then ineffective. Its amazing what you can do with brains, and good coaching there was nothing to stop the proteas doing that the week before, but hey you guys werent smart enough to think about it. Winners are Grinners 4 more years boys

      Francois - 2011-10-18 21:40

Two early penalties by Craig Joubert shut Pocock down, whereas in our game he got away twice playing the ball on the ground in front of their own posts which should've been a yellow card for a professional foul. Brussouw getting kneed on the head in full sight of the linesman also didn't help.

      Jack - 2011-10-18 23:03

Bok, either your spelling sucks or something is eating your words. Anyway do goats eat proteas?

      Norman - 2011-10-19 01:33

@BOK, so what you are saying Bok is they cant see at night and they cant spell either? what a duffess you must be!!! I thought that kind of attitude didn't exist anymore - I guess it still does in your neck of the woods. THATS WHY YOU DONT DESERVE TO WIN!!! you are just a bunch of backward folk, who show their real darkness in their attitude and their language........go allllll BLACKSSSSS....THATS RIGHT, BLACKS~!!!!!!!! YOU BIGOT!!

  • Wesley - 2011-10-18 14:31

Almost looks like a Bruce Willis "lookalike" with hair! shame poor snortjie.......

  • Jeffrey - 2011-10-18 14:40

PDV was possibly the worst SA coach ever....except maybe for Strauli. Despite this fact, the World Cup loss cannot be blamed on PDV, but rather his team and their inability to change game plans. John Smit's leadership was absent when the Boks needed to change the game plan after trying to swing it wide for 60 minutes. Look at the AB's....third choice flyhalf has a cracker...why....because he was protected and they had an amazing game plan. If Cruden was a bok he would have been thrown to the lions like Gaffie du Toit. BOTTOM LINE: PDV WAS A JOKE BUT IT AIN'T HIS FAULT

      Gillbert - 2011-10-18 14:54

look like ive said before he tried to mimic white cause he was just not experienced enough. what coach says that he doesnt believe in a plan B what coach says he deserves a medal before winning a tri nations or rwc what idiot says earl rose is the tiger woods of rugby he made the springbok jersey cheap again after jake white worked so hard to get the springbok supprters to believe in sa rugby again after the strauli administration

      angiebadeggfox - 2011-10-18 15:41

I really don't agree with the comments regarding worst coach comes from, Andre Markgraaf and Carel Du Plessis were absolutely atrocious!!! PDV may not have been the best but he certainly was very far from being the worst.

      Darryn - 2011-10-18 15:55

I don't think ANYONE could be worse than Streauli....... Markgraaf and du Plessis were not far behind.

      Gillbert - 2011-10-18 16:19

that was before my time, i can only comment for generation... but straulli was bad i can atleast remember that

      Bootman - 2011-10-18 16:41

Gillbert if you're only 15 years old, why are you commenting on a site with adults?

  • sihleh.mthethwa - 2011-10-18 14:43

Yeah right, you don't feel sorry for him you're jumping for joy that he didn't get to the finals and win the world cup. Not so long ago you said you're willing to take over from him.

  • Chris - 2011-10-18 14:45

Oh dear? Why do coaches get the flak. Well lets see Ummm? maybe because they are also selectors and do not pick the best team available, in spite of all the warnings! Maybe because it is clear to see that the players follow their ill conceived game plans; like just trying to flatten as many players crashing into them instead of creating gaps and scoring opertunities. Players follow the coaches formula to a tea, and totally lose their freedom to be brilliant, like a forward that is fined for a brilliant box kick leading to a try. They coach teams to senselessly kick away possession at times when we have to keep it, or run the ball when it needs to be kicked. " example - the try ugainst the bokke in the last game " Stuff like kamp staaldraad comes to mind and record losses against teams that cause us shame as a proud bok nation. There are so many more reasons Jake. I think it is the coaches that sometimes can thank the brilliance of his players when winning a world cup for example, when they can perform above the dull and sometimes risky coaching plot.

  • Nick - 2011-10-18 15:15

JAKE WHITE can go fly a kite he also said in his citizen column luck doesn't win you the world cup hmmmm what does he call 2007 the best the boks faced was an under pressure england side with a coach hanging on to his job by a thread and they weren't expected to make it out the group stage he also said there is no such a thing as a fetcher in rugby weskoppies does have extra beds there is a lot of luck or "planning" by paddy helping the all blacks they were lucky not facing boks or wales also lucky got a sa ref when it mattered and again in final having said that they deserve to win the world cup

      lester.hoffman - 2011-10-18 16:23

1000% agree with you. Whenever it suits Jake White, then he wants to make some or other comment to make himself look good. As for your point about England, agreed. Flyin a kite is the nicest way I can put it on a public site like this.

  • Niel - 2011-10-18 15:31

Poor selection by PDV but again and although i dont like jake white, he is right. PDV cannot be blamed for SA's exit. Sorry boks, you have to take the blame as a team for this one

      Manus - 2011-10-18 17:01

Don't you guys think it works both ways? Aren't both the coaching and playing team to blame? As I see it, the coaches decide the game plan(s?) and the team is responsible for executing it. In this instance the game plan could have been more creative and the captain (and most of his team - if you consider how experienced they were) should have taken his chances to get points - i.e. kicked at goal - when it presented.

  • Elize - 2011-10-18 15:39

@ Jake - Shut up and come coach the SB with Rassie and Os! I'm sure you can negotiate youself out of the Brumbies contract!

  • coenie.koch - 2011-10-18 16:38

Rassie will be another disaster!! Then you will see hasbeens in the team. Just look at Province. Letting brilliant youngsters like JJ and Sadie go, but pay thousands for hasbeen Habana again.

  • Freddie - 2011-10-18 16:48

“This World Cup was lost by SA Rugby with the decisions they made four years ago.” Would that be the decision to appoint PdV as coach??

      Francois - 2011-10-18 17:41

maybe the decision not to hire him again?

  • Jeremy - 2011-10-18 16:50

For 2 years Jake White was saying that we were going to world cup with a number of players past their prime with a game plan that was equally dated. In fact he went as far to say that De Villiers was virtually copying his every move. He was proven to be correct. De Villiers didnt see it or if he did he ignored it. SARU didnt force De Villiers to utilise an antiquated system with antiquated players why should they cop the blame? The coach was out of his depth and was consequently bullied into submission by the senior players. Div wants to be remembered as somebody who did it his way, nobody could accuse him of that!

  • bas.horneman - 2011-10-18 17:04

Jake White was a worse coach in my eyes. He must be very deluded if he thinks the Boks won 2007 because of him. Rather it was despite his coaching. Same this RWC. Boks did ok despite DIV. RWC all about the bounce of the ball and character of the players IMO.

      Jacques - 2011-10-18 17:45

Jake was a worse coach but he won a world cup and div did not. Sorry BAS but you have no clue mate. In 2007 we were top of our game and we knew we won even before the final. Think about it how many players did Div play out of place since he started as coach. How many players did he substitute with the bench at the wrong time. Did we know what our team was before we went into the world cup. How many injuries did we receive under his reign. And please answer this....What did Jake leave us with (A team that took the tri nations and the lions tour in one year). What is div leaving us... (Half a team who has left and half a team which battle with constant injury) No mate Jake left us with a solid foundation but DIV being the coawrd as he is did not developt a team he did not build he over used Jakes team. No mate DIV is as good at coaching as i am with spelling

  • Vernon - 2011-10-18 20:00

sorry div you were the NEARLY man..mutch love.....f ...the rest.

  • John - 2011-10-18 22:19

“This World Cup was lost by SA Rugby with the decisions they made four years ago.” “And as I sit back with a whiskey and soda highball and raise a silent toast to all Springbok coaches, I have to ask myself one prickly question: Why is it the coaches always take the flak? “Some things do change, but the more they change, the more they stay the same.” ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Strained relationship??? What relationship??? Cheers!

  • Melissa - 2011-10-19 09:15

Not Div's fault New Zealand fixed the match so that they can win the world cup. Strange how silent the Australian supporters are on this forum now after they lost with such embarrassment. Showing how weak they are when they can't cheat to win. This is the worst world cup ever. The winners was chosen by the referees, not the quality of the team.

  • thabani.mkhatshwa - 2011-10-19 09:58

Despite the inflated arrogance of this guy (to me that is ) he is a brilliant coach ! Maybe we need him in this hour of darkness

  • Tony - 2011-10-19 10:28

The blame should be sqaurely put on SARU for appointing dat clown as a coach.he was totally out of his depth.didnt bring anything new to the boks on the contrary they went backwards big time people like john smit shud've been dumped 2yrs ago he is a disgrace to bok rugby.he is only rated the 5th best in his position????? theres definately something very wrong in S.A rugby wen this sort of thing happens to blame the ref is very poor leadership.none of his players stepped up to da plate wen brussow left da field leading to a field day for pocock.Spies was AWOL as usual agains decent opposition.Victor matfield's indescretion led to the last penalty being awarded against the boks so they only got themselves to blame.

  • Zee - 2011-10-19 10:52

Jake White, you were the biggest critic of PDV . So much so that I believe that you are gloating at the loss. If the 'powers' thought that you were any better they would have invited you to re-apply for the job. So quit this jibe and get on with your life. You really are an armchair commentator

  • Barry - 2011-10-19 20:42

Goooo Peter !! Down with Jake !!
