Canberra - Jake White has given Allister Coetzee his vote of confidence to succeed Peter de Villiers when the current Springbok coach's tenure comes to an end.
Speaking from his RugbyXV website, White said he felt that Coetzee was the most obvious choice to replace De Villiers if the current Springbok coach is axed after the Rugby World Cup.
“I think it's only fair that Allister gets the job, and that has nothing to do with me having worked with him before. Allister should've got the job in 2008, when he knew the players like the back of his hand.”
In 2008, Coetzee, Chester Williams and Heyneke Meyer lost out on the Springbok coaching post after SARU decided De Villiers was the best candidate for the position after his successful spell with the Baby Boks.
White went on to add that Coetzee’s subsequent accomplishments had proven his readiness for the task.
“The Stormers have finished second on the Super Rugby log twice in the past two years under Allister, something that shouldn't be shirked at. He's been groomed by SA Rugby to do the job, and it would be wrong of them not to pick him at the last hurdle again.”
“He's coached SA 'A', SA Under-23, been an assistant Bok coach - how could they not pick him? He's gone through the ranks and has a list of achievements to show it would be an injustice if they don't pick him,” White added.
De Villiers's current contract runs until the end of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
