In 2010, matches for RWC 2011 that were originally awarded to Carisbrook were transferred to the new Otago Stadium.

Construction on the stadium began in June 2009 and was scheduled for completion later in 2011 in time for Rugby World Cup 2011.

Otago Stadium is the newest sporting venue in the country and will be New Zealand’s first fully covered stadium. The stadium contains an all-weather roof, flexible seating layouts, and has all the amenities required for the staging of an international sporting event. Flexible space in the East and West Stands with the ability to bring in temporary seats, means it can tailor the layout for a variety of sports and events, making sure fans are always close to the action.

The ground's current capacity will be 30,000 for the World Cup.
