Tutu: Give Div more credit

2011-09-09 08:52

Johannesburg - Springbok coach Peter De Villiers does not get much credit when its due, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said on Friday.

"Some have noticed that when things have gone well for the Springboks, De Villiers has not received much credit," Tutu said in a statement.

"Now, he has taken a team to New Zealand that many believe can win the Rugby World Cup. That's at least half the job already well done... I would like to wish Peter De Villiers and his management team well."

Tutu said the Springboks were an important ingredient in "the medicine" used to treat "wounded South Africans".

"They remind us of our infancy, our fragility, our strength... the moment the cup was in Madiba and Francois Pienaar's hands. They inspire us and give us hope," he said referring to the Springboks 1995 win against New Zealand.

"There are few sights and sounds that so stir the soul of our nation as that of the Springboks belting out Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika before an important match, one of them, of course, is when the captain holds the trophy aloft," Tutu quipped.

"These are intensely unifying experiences that never fail to give one gooseflesh... And on top of that, there's the rugby."

Tutu as an Archbishop said that winning was not important, but for the team to do their best.

"...I have stood next to Bakkies and Beast. It is surely impossible for anyone to get past them. Do your best and make us proud," he said.

Meanwhile deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe arrived in New Zealand on Friday where he was expected to attend the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup.

Motlanthe would then proceed to Wellington to visit the Springbok team ahead of their first World Cup game against Wales.

Sports minister Fikile Mbalula, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies, Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile, and Deputy Sports Minister Gert Oosthuizen accompanied Motlanthe.

How much credit does he actually deserve?

      JohnnyBB - 2011-09-09 09:10

....here is some credit.... .......PDV is a wonderful clown...!!! ......even the Aussies and Kiwis agree....

      gooinat - 2011-09-09 09:15

Atleast we can agree on one thing, hey Boys???

      Nathi - 2011-09-09 09:16

If he is so bad, why don't you go and coach the team?

      Francois - 2011-09-09 09:23

Dear Archbishop Emiritus Tutu, can you please state to whom you have spoken that so many of them believe we can win the world cup? Then half - way there is not to listen to the opinion of these people, but qualifying for the final. That is half way. We all hope that the Spingboks can pull a rat out of the hat and then Snorre will be a hero as the coach of the first team to sucessfully defend their WC title, but once again that is also half way. You had to win the cup to defend it - thus 50% of that credit should go to Jake White. The nice thing about Snorre was that nobody could accuse him of being a racist or not supporting transformation, but White was accused thereof, yet on Sunday Snorre will almost field a Jake White team. If you, Arch, can help us further on this course of unifying SA by means of rugby, preach to Hoskins that the best man must play regardless of race - on the provincial and S15 and national level, no coach will choose a white player because he is white and not the best, there simply is too much at stake. Yet this little piece of logic gets lost in the politics. Thus ask that the best man play and the best man coach and if you can further it ask that the best man get the job in any environment.

      Zip23 - 2011-09-09 09:27

Come now people, you all said the same about Jake, get rid of those chips on your shoulders and enjoy the World Cup, only comes every four years.

      Richie - 2011-09-09 09:46

We must stop blaming Div only, ... he has army of competent "support" staff advising him (Rassie, etc). If its not him, it will just be another politically appointed person of the ‘right" colour...and that is a fact. The Springboks are jewel were the bitter ANC folk like to kick us. If he is (and he is) just a front man... my only wish is we get a well spoken "front" man. Like Owen from Super Sport?

      Green Oaks - 2011-09-09 09:48

Old man. Go to bed. It is past your bed time !!

      Bulldozer - 2011-09-09 10:00

Nathi, I've got a nice job, thank you.

      TacksGP - 2011-09-09 10:39

@ManDonkie & GreenOaks!!! Respect your elders guys, God will Bless You!!!

      Bulldozer - 2011-09-09 12:12

Now why in the world would I get 'thumbs down' for saying I've got a nice job?

      Bulldozer - 2011-09-09 12:45

      Seriously?

      gooinat - 2011-09-09 12:52

      Must be your face Ace:):)

      OldSA - 2011-09-09 13:33

Lets give him credit, Div did flippen well while Jake was still in SA.

      Makutu - 2011-09-09 15:06

How many coaches have beaten the All blacks 3 times in a row?

  • Zip23 - 2011-09-09 09:07

    Hail Snorre. Our great leader.

      Blougroen - 2011-09-09 09:44

And hail to Tutu, now is a good time to leave as an advisor . . . . first a wealth tax and now a demand for credit . . . . . . . . well at least he realises there is no rugby capital left for this particular enterprise and that it can only be done on credit . . . . .

      sipholess - 2011-09-09 12:02

Tutu, you are the worst kind..........A card carrying ANC, holy moly, politician.........A very dangerous man indeed !

  • one-way - 2011-09-09 09:10

  • Will99 - 2011-09-09 09:11

8 weeks! If the Boks bring the cup home, then he can get credit. If not, well then so be it!

      Shark-Chic - 2011-09-09 09:18

Totally agree. Lets hope he brings back the cup. He will get all my praise.

  • gooinat - 2011-09-09 09:18

Did Tutu give Jake any credit in 2007

      JohnnyBB - 2011-09-09 09:20

...no, .....because Jake was too White.....

      Big mack - 2011-09-09 09:23

  • jvl - 2011-09-09 09:21

The Boks successess as they are, have been despite of Div not because of Div ,and that is why we are more relieved then gratefull. The price you pay when you decide to force politics into sport. Our response to employing a very average coach for the National team, when we all know there are better candidates that were overlooked.

  • Lab-Rat - 2011-09-09 09:22

Pi$$ off tutu, nobody cares what your racist a$$ has to say anymore.

      Frans Smith - 2011-09-09 17:50

he is getting madder by the day..., same illness maybe as mugabe?

  • sqc - 2011-09-09 09:26

Eish Arch - wassup man? - since retirement from public eye you have been increasingly guilty of gibberish utterings.

  • tommy 2 - 2011-09-09 09:26

    Well said Mr TUTU.

  • restech - 2011-09-09 09:28

  • johannlatsky - 2011-09-09 09:34

  • Veld66 - 2011-09-09 09:36

Certain people in this country will never change, born racist scam, die racist scam! I mean some Boers.

      Zip23 - 2011-09-09 09:41

Jeez dude, scum/scam? Boers/Broers? What you trying to say?

      Veld66 - 2011-09-09 09:50

U understand the meaning & the targets! Spellings need not to be correct

      Bulldozer - 2011-09-09 10:04

Zip, don't be nasty. It's not Veld's fault he didn't get the opportunity his brothers got, to finish school when apartheid was abolished.

      Zip23 - 2011-09-09 10:21

Veld, do you realise that by taking offence because people blast other people, with a racial undertone or not, you are just the same, thus your little rant is just as applicable on you, twat.

  • Jon - 2011-09-09 09:42

Since tutu's comments on "WHITE MAN TAX" I cant stand hearing his name, this guy is a joke!!!!

  • TK - 2011-09-09 09:46

It seems that Desmond Tutu is looking for work and so is building his public profile again - he has something to say about everything. What does PDV deserve credit for? For playing the same game as in 2007 even though he promised a more expansive game plan? For copying Jake White's support team recipe? For bringing in no new players of colour that he has identified, even though before he became coach he said that there were 50 players of colour he could choose? Or for putting his mouth in it time and again and saying thre most absurd rubbish and making SA Rugby an embarrassment. No, at this point PDV deserves no accolades - to take the Springbok team to the WC - anyone can do that with the support team he has - I could manage that team as well as he does! Anything less than the semis would be a total failure. Reaching the semis is like a bogey and only if SA wins, then he can get credit because this is what he said he would do.

  • Worker - 2011-09-09 09:48

He says way TOOTOO much, exposing his ignorance. Many of the BEE people want either more cash or more credit, and then complain they weren't GIVEN enough - WORK for it bro !

  • Meanleader - 2011-09-09 09:58

OH SHUT UP TUTU !!!!!! You talk about bringing the country together with one half of your forked tongue ...and with the other half , you want whites to give the blacks more of their wealth ....after the Natives have screwed up for 17 years of freedom ...you sound just like Mugabe !!! The longer the blacks fail to get get their lives together , the more they want from the whites ... you make m,e sick !!!

  • JustinD - 2011-09-09 10:04

    I'm dreaming...i'm dreaming...i'm dreaming

  • Bill - 2011-09-09 10:05

What's with Tutu and all his jabber jabber lately..! Seems he wants to be in the spotlight.

  • SAtheBest - 2011-09-09 10:12

You people make me sick, this human being has done such great things for South African rugby (he is one of the all time best coaches of South African rugby if you look at his track record , this is fact). Some of you have no respect for fellow human beings and South African. I tell you many South Africans are inherently racist and they don't know it...i don't ever remember Jake White being called any of these names.

      Hetrohero - 2011-09-09 10:19

How many white ministers does South Africa have? I rest my case.

      Nicholas - 2011-09-09 10:33

Read jake White's autobiography. He had far worse criticism and pressure than PeaDiv, and it came from many white people as well. Don't forget that. His job was constantly under threat. Its not always necessarily racism. But I'm not denying that some of it is. Remember that our rugby public are very harsh judges. And objectively, PeaDiv has made many claims that he didn't live up to. But that said, his record is good, and I will be supporting the Bok (PeaDiv included) all the way.

      Ambiorix - 2011-09-09 11:19

Thanks SAtheBest....most of the people on this blog don't deserve to be called south africans. Piss off the lot of you Div and Tutu haters, bloody keyboard cowards. Go the Boks!

      Isgaak - 2011-09-09 12:46

some of these a$$ h@!* dont know it

  • Susan - 2011-09-09 10:13

Is our new minister of finance now a rugby fundi too?

  • Jonathan - 2011-09-09 10:15

TuTu - Stop talking; you're starting to remind me of Mugabe - When you get old, do the right thing and retire from making stupid statements about things you know nothing about. Just sit back and enjoy your life and leave the rest of SA in peace!

  • Hetrohero - 2011-09-09 10:15

... and Tutu is a real bishop ..? LOL

      SAtheBest - 2011-09-09 10:26

For one the deputy minister of sport, Barbara Hogan and few others...the amount certainly is representative of the demographics. So what case are you resting?

      Hetrohero - 2011-09-09 11:56

How many white men are ministers in South Africa?

  • Bloodstone - 2011-09-09 10:16

Bakkies is out Bishop, but not to worry, I believe Div is going to play Caster Simenya in his place....

      JohnnyBB - 2011-09-09 13:32

Maandonkie, .............he he he he he he he he he he he he he.!!!!

  • Nicholas - 2011-09-09 10:22

PeaDiv, may make some ridiculous statements and get up peoples noses (including me) but his record is reasonable, the RWC will be his judgement day(s). Just remember how Jake White was treated! During his tenure, the media, the Blue Bull Rugby Union, and a host of ex Boks were trying to get him fired, and many of you probably were on the same boat. Remember how bad the Boks slumped in 2006? Remember his decision to keep top players out of the away leg of Tri Nations 07. If his team hadn't won the RWC, he would've been written off. But he didn't, and now everyone still can't stop singing his praises. Try be objective in your views. Support our team, and our coach, try be patriots, at least for the duration of RWC 2011.

      SAtheBest - 2011-09-09 10:38

Well said Nicholas! This forum seem to be about faceless people taking cheap shots at innocent human beings trying to make a honest living which just happen to be in the public eye...

  • Jon JJ - 2011-09-09 10:26

Give Div more credit for what? The guy's a turkey and is only there as a "token" coach. Tutu is a serious idiot.

  • bullincapeto - 2011-09-09 10:55
