SA journos robbed in NZ

2011-10-05 10:27

Auckland - Equipment worth R60 000 was stolen from two South African photographers in Auckland, New Zealand, reported The Star on Wednesday.

Christiaan Kotze and Barry Aldworth's items were taken after South Africa's match against Samoa at the North Harbour stadium on Saturday.

The pair's hired car was broken into near a drop-off point for the media.

"We were told it was safe to park there," said Aldworth.

Two computers, photographic equipment, money, clothes and a tent were stolen.

Last week, SuperSport journalists Brenden Nel and Gavin Rich had their car broken into at a parking lot at a hotel in Auckland. An ipod was stolen.

    Aww diddums!

      Gazza69 - 2011-10-05 11:49

Glad to hear the kiwis are making them feel at home!!

      MaanDonkie - 2011-10-05 12:53

Investigate the ANC embassy staff in Auckland!

      Michael - 2011-10-05 13:23

@MaanDonkie, political parties are not granted diplomatic statuses across the globe. You should be a donkey to think that they do!

      Fredster69 - 2011-10-05 13:46

Check the South Africans upon returning

      Met - 2011-10-05 13:59

Had this been in SA, they would more likely, been hi-jacked shot, perhaps killed, and the items stolen. In SA they kill for a cell phone- Denying this is being less than honest

      Bok Fan - 2011-10-05 14:43

Shocking, just another unsafe place in the world like the UK etc. They lucky they weren't murdered. I am never going to NZ after this - ever!!!

      Met - 2011-10-05 15:44

If ever there there was an avalanche of denial, this is it. Is SA really a bastion of peace and safety as the comments here suggest? I live in SA and I am not fooled as you are obviously fooling yourselves

  • Geraldo Mc phu - 2011-10-05 10:44

It's clearly the South Africans who fled SA under the pretext of getting away from crime only to become criminals themselves ...

      Civil_Rights - 2011-10-05 10:56

You clearly exhibiting the final stages of stupidity and verbal diarrhea. And crime is evident....someone must've taken ur brain at birth.

      Geraldo Mc phu - 2011-10-05 11:02

@ Civil_Rights ...and planted it in you , so i can get a fresh one that allows me to see the bigger picture

      Zip23 - 2011-10-05 13:37

@Mswati, boet, you are really funny. Not sure which is worse, your bad spelling, the racist comment, or the inferiority complex. Clown.

      Zip23 - 2011-10-05 14:12

Tell me Mswati, who did Afrikaners steal from? Or better, heres a thought, is it stealing when nobody claims the asset? Thus, if an apple is laying on the pavement, someone pics it up, and sell it to someone. You then come 3 days later, claim the apple came from a tree that grows on your street, thus the money made from the sale must be yours, because you claim to know the tree. Mmmm.

      Leonard - 2011-10-05 14:52

@Mswati .... it was clearly the fault of the old apartheid regime LOL

      Neles - 2011-10-05 15:41

@Zip23 - seems like the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree?

  • Kerr - 2011-10-05 10:45

hahah, wonder what Chief Kok and (Fake) Johnny-BB and Maori will say now about thier wonderful, trouble free, racist free, and crime free New Zealand, which, by the way, is country they have never been too...

      EnglishBoer - 2011-10-05 10:47

The theft of some stuff from a car kinda pales in significance to the violent barbaric crimes that occur daily in SA dont you think? Can you think?

      Cowabunga - 2011-10-05 11:56

At least they were not raped or murdered or both, thats what usually happens is SA.

      jowza - 2011-10-05 12:02

the article is about new zealnd

      Anton - 2011-10-05 16:02

At least a crime like this still makes news headlines. Murder do not even gets mentioned in the news in SA unless it is a high profile connection. Get over yourself. Kerr

EnglishBoer is telling the truth, we cannot run away from the fact that people get murdered for cellphones, get raped every second and people get mutilated for muthi everyday...truth hurts...In all races there are thieves, it doesn't matter what colour they are or the texture of their hair a thief is a thief and deserves to be locked in a room with Steve Hofmeyr, Julius Malema, Robert Mugabe and Rush Limbaugh... (that's a death sentence)

      Clive25 - 2011-10-05 12:27

@englishBoer, yopu forgot to mention that family in PTA that grandparents are producing ponographic material of their children, grandchildren and great grand children

      EnglishBoer - 2011-10-05 12:50

@clive25 dont talk about your grandparents that way.

  • Ivym - 2011-10-05 10:49

Their is a vast difference between robbery and theft. This was theft out of a motor vehicle and not robbery. Careless of the idiots to have left the stuff in the car in the first place especially coming from South Africa where they should know better. Was a crime waiting to happen.

      Megga - 2011-10-05 11:54

Making excuses for crime in New Zealand. Crime is crime regardless of where it occurs or who the culprit is and it must be condemned as such.

  • 106SA - 2011-10-05 10:56

Too many South Africans living in NZ!!!!!

      Black Beauty - 2011-10-06 06:26

100% AGREE, but they aren't too bad in person....just that bloody rugby team!!! I hate the Springboks out of respect.....Bastards LOL

  • Ya Beauty! - 2011-10-05 11:00

Too many uneducated, untravelled idiots on this site, New Zealand has always been violent and had a high crime rate. Some Auckland ghetos will make Alex seem like a tame place nothing new really. This is why most Kiwis are running to Oz but they are bringing a lot of crime you only have to visit some parts of Brisbane. Look at Cooper for instance born in NZ and convicted for breaking into a house sometime last year whilst playing for thw wallabies. Bottom line crime is global and its not exclusive to SA, Infact apart from violent crime both NZ and Australia have higher crime that SA only difference in SA the crime tends to be more violent,

      EnglishBoer - 2011-10-05 11:05

Cooper broke into a house? What a terrible crime!!!!!! How about the Blue Bulls player that killed 3 people with an axe?

      Ya Beauty! - 2011-10-05 11:46

Englishidiot, Copper was a wallaby that broke into someone's house a thief mind you, you will never be accepted in Oz mate no matter how hard you try neither will you be accepted in England by the sounds of it you are just a confussed, uneducated idiot that hides behind colour, no different from a white version of Malema, Bulls players was aquited fyi thats how the law works, self defence is not a crime igonorance is though you idiot

      SirPlod - 2011-10-05 11:47

I don't know what's funnier, the possibility that you believe the rubbish you're spouting, or the fact that you have more thumbs ups on your comment than downs, meaning others believe the rubbish you're spouting as well. There's no doubt that crime is all over the world, but NZ and Aus have a higher crime rate than SA? Give me a break. NZ has always been violent and has a high crime rate? High compared to where? If NZ has a high crime rate, then South Africa's is catastrophic. Sounds you're you're the one that needs educating...

      Ya Beauty! - 2011-10-05 11:56

SirPod you are obviously an idiot i wont bother but you can google the world crime rates and see for yourself, there is no doubt SA has more violent crime but both NZ and Australia have higher crime such as house break ins, car break in etc plus much higher gand violence, stats dont lie sir as much as you might want to fool yourself

      SirPlod - 2011-10-05 12:12

Statistics can be manipulated any way you like to get your result. The proof is in the pudding - why are people flocking out of South Africa and into Australia and New Zealand. Why do I live here in Aus with no burglar bars, no alarm, no armed response, if crime is supposed to be so high? Why am I able to drive/walk around at night without a care in the world? Explain that to me? One more thing - learn to spell before you lecture anybody about not being educated.

      Ya Beauty! - 2011-10-05 12:42

SirPod i have lived in all three countries i know, be happy in OZ mate, but bottom line is you will never accepted thats why you spend so much time on this site. You will forever be an outsider. There are more people returning to SA today than ever i am one of them so i speak from experience. There is no way you can tell me the education system in Oz is better than SA. Every country has its problems but i would much rather deal with problems in my own country than in a place where i will never be accepted. Try as hard as you can mate you will always be a South African looser in OZ mate, besides its past your bed time now...

      Met - 2011-10-05 12:49

Lets just be clear. There is crime indeed all over the world. But be honest! SA are the Cup holders and none of the countries in NZ will take our title from us- and I am speaking Crime. Lets not be in denial

      EnglishBoer - 2011-10-05 12:55

@Ya Beauty I wasnt referring to Bees Roux you moron. Get up to date with the news before commenting. So shame you are ones of those useless people that couldnt make it overseas......had to come back hey? Couldnt get a job in a 1st world enviornment? Im not surprised.

      Ya Beauty! - 2011-10-05 13:24

Englishboer for your info i came back to SA after 23 years by choice and nothing else, i do not have to tell you my finacial position as its not important. I cam back because i could afford it plus i just could not ignore the amount of opportunities in SA at the moment for those willing to work hard. I for one have never worked for anyone else so the decision to move back was not difficult the opportunities in this place are just crazy. I still have a lot of assets in both NZ and OZ but i am too smart to pass away the opportunities in this place plus what i can give back plus how i am appreciated, love it. You on the other hand will forever be a looser in the eyes of Kiwiz and Ozis full stop.

      EnglishBoer - 2011-10-05 13:44

@Ya Beauty judging from your grammar,I am not surprised that you never had the opportunity to work for anyone.

      mozzer - 2011-10-05 13:58

Have it on pretty good authority that Cooper broke into that house to steal the laptop to avoid less than desirable pictures of himself and another bloke becoming public....and I mean pretty good authority!!

      milswanka - 2011-10-05 14:52

I want to hear Maori's comment on this one, as he is always the one that says SA is an unsafe place.

      EnglishBoer - 2011-10-05 15:37

@mozzer I heard the other bloke was known as Ya Beauty...

      Andrew - 2011-10-06 06:02

Ya Beauty - I have never read so much rubbish in my entire life. What part of New Zealand did you live in? First of all, they don't have "ghettos", well I have not seen one, and I have travelled quite a bit in New Zealand. Secondly the crime rate in NZ higher than in NZ, for your information, they had 36 murders last year and to the Kiwis that is unacceptable, they had no fatalities due to accidents over Easter, compare that to South Africa? Thirdly Kiwi's go to Australia because the salaries are a lot better, I know because I work with it daily. You probably left because you are the looser you are trying to make others out to be or they probably kicked you out because of your stinking attitude, but my guess is, you are lying and you have never been to New Zealand or Oz for that matter, because your opinion is based on lies. I know because I am currently living here.

  • Clark Kent - 2011-10-05 11:06

We are even now because the NZ TV crew got robbed of $100000 worth of equipment at the rugby world cup in South Africa

      jowza - 2011-10-05 12:13

      prove it

      Clark Kent - 2011-10-06 05:34

@Jowza my pleasure suck on this ONE News is the latest media outlet to have equipment stolen while covering the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa. An estimated $100,000 worth of equipment was stolen from camera operator Tony George's hotel room in Rustenburg, in the country's Northeast. George and reporter Donna-Marie Lever were staying at a FIFA sanctioned hotel in Rustenburg near the venue where the All Whites are due to play their first World Cup game. The Wellington-based cameraman's hotel room door was jemmied open and all his gear was taken, including his clothes and passport. The stolen equipment includes a camera, sound and lighting equipment, satellite equipment and laptop. "We're just very grateful Tony and Donna-Marie are safe and well, it's a very timely and sobering reminder of how vigilant all Kiwis travelling to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup need to be", said ONE News editor, Paul Patrick. "Donna-Marie will still be filing reports for ONE News due to the generosity of AP in South Africa, the news agency has helped them out with broadcast equipment, transmission capability, transport and money until we can organise replacements, they have been amazing and we're very grateful". The incident follows a string or burglaries targeting foreign media in South Africa. Spanish and Portuguese journalists were robbed at gunpoint at a lodge north of Johannesburg on Thursday and Chinese journalists had items stolen from their car by gunmen.

  • Brainbow - 2011-10-05 11:08

The equipment can be found in Samoa.

  • hans - 2011-10-05 11:11

This is all out of proportion! There are thieves all over the world. It's only when there are high profile events that it is reported world-wide. Can you imagine if all the crime was reported in the newspapers...they would look like telephone books.

  • Durbanpoison - 2011-10-05 11:16

hahah probably robbed by the Somoan Team...... see a twitter soon.... maybe nr 12..

  • Percy - 2011-10-05 11:18

Why is this article in the sport section??? This has nothing to do with the RWC but all to do with a crime being commited. When such things happen in South Africa...its headline news all over ther world!

      Sharkie-fan - 2011-10-05 13:36

Because it happened to journalists and presenters that are there for the RWC!

  • Soothsayer - 2011-10-05 11:20

    It payback time.

  • david.roets - 2011-10-05 11:40

So it is not only South Africa where it happens.....

      SirPlod - 2011-10-05 11:52

No, you're right, it's not only in South Africa. But only in SA do farmers get executed along with their children, and only in South Africa do 20,000 (or more?) people get murdered every year...

      Point Blank - 2011-10-05 12:44

@SirPod, the thing is we don't deny the crime in htis country... Why you so protective, is it because your little bubble burst?

  • Ingie - 2011-10-05 11:45

bwaaahh bwahh...LMFAO sorry not laughing that is was stolen but that people think its only in SA that tourists get robbed

  • Al Online - 2011-10-05 12:01

..oh, so it's not just in SA where journo's stuff get's stolen....or where riots take place, like in the UK...

  • cgtours - 2011-10-05 12:16

Why dont you wait until they are captured and see who it is- DECENT families in New Zealand do not do crime- BUT they also have Immigrants from you no where !!! and many of these IMMIGRANTS(from crime ridden backgrounds) have and are commiting crimes and some have already been deported! It is always the INFLUX that brings Trouble to any Country, with it comes the professional Gangsters who have a LOT of experience where they come from. We have the same problem here ! It is in the mentality and the Genes !

  • obviousT - 2011-10-05 12:17

The biggest ironey in this story is the fact that some equipment was stolen out a car and it made the HEAD LINES in NZ. If that was SA you would even wonder if it is worth it to report the incident as not much comes from it and it will never make it to the newslpapers. Our Headlines are of murder, vandalistic strickes etc. I would any day take a stolen item over and above a murder/hi-jacking etc.

  • theprodigy - 2011-10-05 12:45

must have been the Samoan thugs (all brats bum chums)

Somehow according to some comments it is much safer in violent S.A. than NZ.Ag come on man,we all know S.A is still tops when it comes to crime.Stealing from a car in NZ is regarded as serious by their police, but only murder,hi jacks, rape, serious assault might be regarded as serious in S.A.The rest are minor.I would not be surprised if it were S.Africans who stole in NZ.haha Bok Fan.

      VM1 - 2011-10-05 16:43

@Ken Now I suppose you mean all ther white expat who line in NZ . We are exporting crime and terrorism these days remember the Oslo bomber !!!!!!!

  • anna - 2011-10-05 16:17

In MD, USA in a county, that is a district of the state, there were 82 murders. That is murders in a community of educated people, all having gone through the school system. So for me that number shouts out a bigger scourge than the actual number. I was shocked! But you don't hear about it you see. As far as the journalists is concerned. The robbers knew that they are accustomed to this kind of thing so they would be the best victims.

  • southSA - 2011-10-05 16:55

Interesting article. What I can comment on South Africa is that crime rates are decreasing alot. 1994 the murder rate was 27000 per year it now in 2011 sits at 15000. The police and government are working hard to make our nation great. Been studying in Oz for the past 2years and can't wait to go back to Cape Town. Viva DA for drop in poverty, increase in jobs and decrease in crimes.... Check 2011 stats too see how much SA has moved forward... Love it... #home

      daniel.beeching - 2011-10-05 22:49

15000 per year? That is enormous. Here in NZ it is 34 per year. Still too high but I just can't comprehend 15000 murders per year.

  • EJ - 2011-10-05 19:27

wow, OMG.Shock horror. Im in a state of shock. Car theft and an Ipod stolen and all of a sudden we is HEADLINE news and we all act like its the end of the world. Get a grip people. There are far worse things that happen in our country and it doesnt get this much attention as news. Theft at big sporting events is ALWAYS a problem no matter what country is hosting the event. At last year FIFA world cup, teams like England, Columbia and Greece were victims of theft when hotel staff (you would least expect) stole items worth 10 times the amount taken here including taking the replicas of the world cup trophies

  • 722 - 2011-10-05 19:31

I thought they have no crime. Is'nt it why people leave SA.

  • Supermack - 2011-10-05 20:03

What did they expect with the country flooded with South African rugby fans

  • Clark Kent - 2011-10-05 20:43

14000 murders a year in SA ,and they are reporting on a Ipod being stolen in NZ !! . Quick call interpol these theives must be caught in NZ. Mean while back in the home country let the car jackings, murders ,and home invasions continue with merry abandon

  • Mark - 2011-10-07 13:43

What a bunch of nanas... where in the world do you leave all you stuff in the car... Probably was visible 2... Idiots... I would be to embarrassed to even report it

  • Nathi - 2011-10-07 14:14

This is a good one to all those South Africans who have such negative views of our country. Crime is everywhere, so get over it. I wonder how many of you have finalised to emmigrate to NZ. Still going? LMAO!!!!
