Johannesburg - More South Africans watch the Rugby World Cup on SABC than on any other local broadcaster, the SA Broadcasting Commission said on Friday.
"The SABC, in its endeavour to reach as many non-traditional rugby viewers (as possible), is well on its way to achieving this objective," spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said.
Since the opening ceremony in New Zealand on September 9, the station's SABC 2 channel had delivered an average audience of 1 057 120 per live game, while SABC 1 delivered 686 325 viewers for the matches it carried.
As the public service broadcaster was sub-licensing the games from SuperSport, the SABC said its main focus was to broadcast all South African games live, he said in a statement.
"South Africans have come out in their numbers to watch the Boks play on SABC television."
The broadcaster listed viewer numbers as follows:
- South Africa v Wales, 3 338 810 viewers on SABC2
- South Africa v Fiji, 3 448 050 viewers on SABC2
- South Africa v Namibia 2 311 149 viewers on SABC2
The opening ceremony had pulled 1 092 392 viewers on SABC2.
"The SABC will continue to bring quality programming throughout the tournament, as we support the Boks in bringing the trophy home, as defending champions," Kganyago said.
