Petition to have Bryce banned

2011-10-10 13:22

Cape Town - A petition on Facebook has been started to have under fire New Zealand referee Bryce Lawrence banned from handling another game of rugby.

Lawrence was widely slammed for his officiating in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final between South Africa and Australia in Wellington on Sunday.

The Wallabies won 11-9.

The petition, started on Sunday, has already attracted over 8 000 followers.

Why are such poor losers? If it's not the refs its the umpires. We did not look like world champs from the first game.

      theprodigy - 2011-10-10 15:57

@ Richie, I wonder if the troll expats that gloat on News24 about their All Black team read the article, I have been following NZ & Aus media, & they are a hell of a lot better than the idiots that find the need to try and gain self esteem by posting insulting & negative things on our pages. Although Lawrence was shocking (bias more than incompetence), we should not make excuses, we should have finished off better & beaten the Aussies, despite the ref. Props to Chris Davis (Aussie Reporter) for being honest. If there is one thing that Paddy Obrein better get right, its poor reefing (Nigel Owen) or bias (Bryce Lawrence).

      sachasea - 2011-10-10 16:24

I was more than happy to root for the Kiwi's to win the World Cup until that poor excuse for a ref committed such an injustice against us. Wales for the win!!! It's not often I'll support a team from the northern hemisphere over one from the south, but honestly I am utterly disgusted about Sunday's controversy. We were robbed. Unsurprising to see that corruption still pervades even the highest tiers of professional sport. Bring in new technology to stamp out corrupt and biased officiating.

      Johnny-BB - 2011-10-10 16:26

Bryce is the WORST ref ever... of every match he officiates, he only sees about 5 minutes of it.

      Bateleur - 2011-10-10 16:53

@Richie, I couldn't find that article on the Australian website at all. I don't think it's genuine

      Ayoba - 2011-10-10 17:21

Should NZ make it to the finals, can we have a petition requesting a South African referee to ref that game?

      Spyker May - 2011-10-10 17:54

      Christo - 2011-10-10 21:14

I think what the Ausies are loosing track of is that we are happy with the Springbok performance and very proud of our boys. What we are trying to say here is that Bryce Lawrence is incompetant, which I think is important, not for South Africa, but for world rugby. South Africans have great respect for Ausie rugby, and look forward to every meeting against them, but we need to keep it a gentlemans game, and people like Lawrence is a disgrace to world rugby.

      kiwi - 2011-10-10 22:01

bad luck guys but you need to move on ,this team was not going to win the 2011 wc.

      Pierre - 2011-10-11 02:35

@Kiwi: Interesting that it should come from somebody called that. Every other day I still have to hear Kiwi's complain about 2007 forward passes and even bloody food poisoning accusations. And mate this Springbok side was arguable the strongest side at this WC tournament; we just don't risk injuries by meaninglessly smash minnow teams; we keep our play for the big games as we showed. You guys might learn something from that.

      Chief Kok - 2011-10-11 05:33

My apologies to all my fans, tablets and booze do not go well together so please ignore my comment at 23h35. What I wanted to say was where can I sign this petition? Can someone send me the link. Worst performance by a ref ever. Some things Kiwis are not very good at, one is refereeing and the other is playing test rugby. ABs are show ponies

      Greg - 2011-10-11 08:27

@ Chief Kok, more like Chief Cock!

      Nicholas.Spaggiari - 2011-12-07 12:47

If there should be a petition against Bryce in rugby, then there should be a global petition against South Africa to ban their cricket from playing in international games.

Yes please! He should have been banned during the S15 already. And how about a re-match between Boks and Wallabies...? Please, save another rugby team from him.

      Sharkie-fan - 2011-10-10 13:50

Crusaders / Sharks game should also be played again cos he robbed us then too

      Anneleen - 2011-10-10 13:54

@Sharkie-fan...thanks for your reply. Now i'm thinking they should declare 2012 as follows: "Bryce-officiated re-match" year...for every team that has been done in by him.

      Ms.D - 2011-10-10 14:19

Two of the smartest people I've came across hahaha That thought just made me smile:) At least we know that they never lost because they weren't any good but rather that HE ISN'T ANY GOOD... I doubt he'd come to SA again:)

      Anneleen - 2011-10-10 14:30

@Ms.D...ha-ha! Maybe he is in hiding at the moment...brushing up on his paltry refereering knowledge.

      birdman - 2011-10-10 23:06

If he is ever chosen to ref any match that involves an SA team again, that team should declare a no show and forfeit the game unless the ref is changed. This will send a clear message to the IRB. The fans who pay their salaries expect proper officiating and not a blatantly biased farce. Andre Watson admitted that he could make any team win - if he wanted to. That's exactly what Lawrence did. He won the game for the AB's easy passage to the final! No doubt that he was paid! He shouldn't even be allowed to be a touch judge!

      Anneleen - 2011-10-11 08:20

@birdman...spot-on comment. He should go, for he is embarrasing the game and name of rugby.

  • Bernard - 2011-10-10 13:25

This is ridiculous. Yes, he was appalling, but its the referee's bosses who should be doing this and not the fans. Fans are too emotional about this type of thing, even if they are right. This is more a lynch mob than a well considered plan-of-action.

      Onestone - 2011-10-10 13:34

sshhttt.... they are taking too long so we do it for them... nothing wrong with that.....

      Lehan - 2011-10-10 13:52

I agree completely Bernard. Besides that the facebook page in question in riddled with personal defimation based on completely inaccurate statistics. Bryce Lawrence is, in my opinion a poor ref, but he is not necesarilly a bad person and to wish him personal harm like many do on that page is sickening. It makes me sad to think that these are the people I share a country with. The boks had EVERY chance to win the match. The forward pass to Lambie was most certainly forward and shouldn't have been, besides which there were no less than THREE knock ons from us leading up to that movement that was missed. Many calls went for us as well and we should have known that he would blow the breakdown the way he did. Heinrich Brussouw and Francois Louw had just as much free reighn at the rucks and we had more than enough ball possesion to win the game with.

      Lance - 2011-10-10 13:54

The refs boss is Paddy O'Brien....A New Zealander..

      sharkie105 - 2011-10-10 13:57

The people who count don't seem to be taking action so it is up to the fans of good rugby to make themselves heard!!! Bryce Lawrence should not be involved with high level rugby matches - maybe he needs to start at school level again.... but then again, you don't want the kids learning that kind of bias!

      AirAction - 2011-10-10 14:16

Who paid for the airfare ,accomadation and rugby ticket ? Not bryse or his boss but the fans.

      So What? - 2011-10-10 14:32

Lehan, I agree with you. It is pointless blaming the ref. It went both ways for the Boks and for the Aussies. If the Boks were to danr slow to sacth on that he was not blowing up the rucks, then do not blame the ref. Some now saying that the pass to Lambie was not forward - rubbish it was. Patriotism is blinding the Bok fans. As you mention, with all the possession the Boks had as well as all the field territory they had they still could not win this game. Pointless blaming the ref now - even if he had a bad game, it went both ways and benfited both sides. I also noticed some infringements from the Boks that he did not blow.

      Jasber - 2011-10-10 14:48

The problem is no body in authority will do any thing about it - the facts are that he either cheated or was bribed with money. He must be investigated - he has changed lives, careers, retirements etc etc. someone must get the bast#rd.

      AndrewG - 2011-10-10 15:00

      RandomDude - 2011-10-10 18:21

So What , why don't you try and understand the game of rugby before you comment on whether it had an impact on the outcome . "It went both ways " favors the defending team which is what we saw !!

      Shadowfax - 2011-10-10 22:54

If you think those passes were forward please watch this video and think again: http://www.supersupporter.co.za/index.php?/topic/6164-the-forward-passby-an-aussie-site/

  • ShadowfaxUK - 2011-10-10 13:25

That's a petition you needed to sign BEFORE Sundays game. To those of you who were happy that we didn't get a NH ref, sorry you missed the last few years of Superrugby. This guy has been murdering the Sharks for years.

      Anneleen - 2011-10-10 13:29

  • Jon JJ - 2011-10-10 13:26

Ok come on fellow South Africans, we're making fools of ourselves!! Watch the game again (without your South Africans glasses on) and look how many infringements the South Africans made without being penalised for them. The penalty that sank us was refered to the ref by the linesman and was justified. We were just crap. Let's face it.

      odin38 - 2011-10-10 13:35

Exactly ! ! ! The boks could not beat an australian side that played terribly . If aus was on form then SA would have got a thorough beating . Our performances against wales and somoa were the warning signs. Bring on the new era

      Onestone - 2011-10-10 13:41

mmm... the penalty that sack us the ref said...'' you are not allowed to sack the player...'?? dude... seriously... wtf???? its not touch rugby!!!

      Dal68 - 2011-10-10 13:46

      Get new glasses Jon

      ResistStance - 2011-10-10 14:05

Why are most South Africans such poor losers? I have seen our teams win many times in the past due to poor ref decisions as well and nobody complains then. Yet every single time we lose something without fail we blame somebody else, why not just accept the truth for once? You lot make us all look bad, shame on you.

      Ross Cameron - 2011-10-10 14:09

That was later in the match when the boks realised that the breakdown was a free for all. We absolutely slaughtered the wallabies in an exceptional performance save the finishing which was abysmal to say the least. Where the hell were the linesman in the rest of the match?! They are just as responsible as Bryce for this shambles! We should have won despite the ref which does not change the fact that something needs to be done about the sub-standard reffing in this match.

      ProudBoer - 2011-10-10 14:19

I agree with you, the ref made a couple of doubtfull decisions but the Bokke did not use their opportunities, of which they had plenty. The possession and territorial stats confirm that. Their ball retention was poor. Our coach should be blamed just as much as the ref for consistently selecting the wrong players.

      ShadowfaxUK - 2011-10-10 14:24

Jon JJ. I don't think South Africans are so much upset that they lost as they are about the manner in which they lost. There are few things that stand out in this game, one of which is that the team that was defending went 23 minutes without being penalised. That's almost unheard of in rugby terms. Also anyone who looked at the stats in that game without knowing the score would assume that SA won handsomely, three times more tackles made by the Aussies, no 5+ phases… the list goes on. This is not just the opinion of most South Africans, it’s the opinion of some overseas sports writers and also the ITV commentators who aren’t scared to point out what they termed “skulduggery”.

      theprodigy - 2011-10-10 16:04

you watch the game again, this time put on your glasses.

      RandomDude - 2011-10-10 18:31

Jon J .. STFU because you really don't have a clue .You're one of those we don't complain about the ref idiots even if you were just bent over and sodomized by him . Let me give you a hint ..why did they change the laws at the breakdown in 2010 ? Did the rest f the world also have their SA glasses on ?

      raven7 - 2011-10-10 22:14

god you people are unbelievable, you wrent good enough on the day....granted most of you are just upset and likely decent people but some of you thugs that are threatening to kill the man over a rugby game!? seriously its no wonder thousands if not millions of south africans have left to move to Aus/NZ & Canada...how many Aus/NZ/Canadians move to south africa?

      grant - 2011-10-11 01:38

I dont know what game you were watching Jon JJ, but we were everything but crap, best game the Boks played for a long time, fact of the matter is, the ref blew two sets of rules, same infringement by Aussies 3 minutes after SA were penalised, yet no penalty for SA, and that was 5 metres from Aussie tryline.

      Nicholas.Spaggiari - 2011-12-07 13:04

@ResistStance I agree, I used to be a bokke fan... but when the true colours of the fans came out. I said good-bye, it's embarrassing to be a part of sour miserable losers. South African fans are now officially known as cry-babies and poor losers that do nothing but blame everyone, which is soooo not me. So it’s a matter of principle The reaction was pathetic and weak, you guys should read what Mr White has to say about the Aussie sports... “they have more sporting ethics, character…” etc and most probably the reason why he has left the bokke and moved to coach in Aus... like he also said, it's not just the opportunity why he moved, but Australia itself. South Africa should be acting the same and not like sissies.

  • Lonewolfman - 2011-10-10 13:27

Nothing will happen as IRB want NZ to win and North South Final, all games with socking ref's have made this true and makes me very sick but don’t have to be a Einstein to see how true this conspiracy is.

Nope, the only cry babies are the SA fans. I think he is long over it now & moved on.

  • clivelang - 2011-10-10 13:34

This is so sad. I'm not a great rugby follower, so I don't know much about this ref and his alleged "preferences". I wonder though what we'd be saying about him if the Bokke had won yesterdays match.....and what is sooooooo sad for me is that I started a Facebook group to try and get people to support me in getting the "authorities" to start doing something about the daily carnage on our roads and was quite unsuccessful-but lets lose a rugby match and everyone is on the bandwagon.....rugby is a sport-the carnage is killing our family members and friends-where are our priorities?

      Bill Liebenberg - 2011-10-10 13:41

@clivelang, brilliant and I agree 100%, seems like we very sore loosers in this country and pathetic how we try and unite against a ref who blew badly both ways yet we cannot unite as a nation against much more important and troubling matters. I am a huge rugby fan but must admit am totally embarrassed at the way our country, rugby players and coaches are putting blame on a referee for our patheitc display of rugby over the last 2 seasons not just one game.

      J Burnstein - 2011-10-10 13:58

Agree completely with Clive and Bill. It is absolutely ridiculous! We didn't lose because of the ref, we lost because we played like crap!

      soekiskoori - 2011-10-10 14:00

No difference whether he blew badly against one or both teams - if he blows badly he shouldn't blow - that's it!

      jerhone - 2011-10-10 18:46

to clivelang you've got more chance of falling pregnant than getting the bobjaane to stop road carnage, this is how they think lower the speed limit by 20 km as if thats going to make a difference but keep the killing machines (taxis) on the roads, points system another scheme so it's easier for a cop to bribe you (i'm sure even you will pay a bribe rather than having your licence suspended but dream on you silly little dreamer as supertramp sang

      Nicholas.Spaggiari - 2011-12-07 13:18

I also totally agree with Bill, Clive & Burnstein here... the blame game and sour losers actually ruined the world cup for me. It left such a foul taste in my mouth everytime I thought of the bokkie, to the point that I'm not a part of the fans anymore. But, I'm happy now to see more comments showing that few people aren't like this. But still, 90% of the fans have serious issues.

  • SIY-AKA - 2011-10-10 13:36

why are we bad losers when we ask the same questions that Aussie did in their previous game and considering this refs history? he clearly has credibility problems and no doubt Aussie would have won if the game was more or less fairly managed. But we never gonna know... "Wallabies' referee Bryce Lawrence admits key blunders"http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/rugby-gold/wallabies-referee-bryce-lawrence-admits-key-blunders/story-fn8ti7yn-1226161549523 "Many of the Kiwi referee's decisions in the 15-6 win by Ireland at Eden Park - particularly at the scrum - appeared to baffle the Wallabies, and allowed Ireland to knock over decisive penalties or repel Australian pressure. But in a crucial twist, The Daily Telegraph understands Lawrence later made admissions he had got several calls wrong at the scrum - including one that led to an Ireland penalty goal - and conceded other decisions were also inaccurate.

  • Chris Herselman - 2011-10-10 13:43

      mike881 - 2011-10-10 15:40

Bryce has proved to be a pathetic ref not just in this game, look at his previous record (games). There is not a rugby side that is happy with his inconsistant refereeing, except for maybe the Crusaders. Bad refs must be removed or at least held accountable for poor games. Mistakes happen - acceptable, but bad refs remain bad!

      Jonathan - 2011-10-10 16:21

Chris you are pathetic this is a serious problem. He is paid to ref a game fairly and to the rules which he did not do. Maybe you should support something else.

All i know is Win or Lose, the Boks will be laughing all the way to the bank AND YOU ALL AINT GETTING A CENT FROM THAT MONEY! As you are all STRESSING, i'm sure that by now each BOK Player has his calculator by him calculating his share. Do yourselves a favor and leave the Ref alone!

      SIY-AKA - 2011-10-10 14:01

100% on the head. They demanded before they left and tahts were the problem arises - no passion - ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

Excuses excuses excuses. Let the flaming and insults begin....

  • vinnie - 2011-10-10 14:01

At least SA never was beaten by another team - they simply lost to a ref. Whoever wins World cup 2011, will know that they were protected from the REAL WORLD CHAMPIONS by a NZ ref.

      kiwi - 2011-10-10 20:40

you yappis are such sore loosers .....take it on the chin ........you lost ...get over it

  • ShadowfaxUK - 2011-10-10 14:01

All I can say is when the Bokke come home 100 000 people should be waiting for them at the airport. Next time Bryce comes to ref in South Africa there should be 200 000 waiting for him at the airport :)

  • brett.macdonald1 - 2011-10-10 14:01

We will continue to see bad and biased reffing as long as there is no recourse against these refs. I think that a Citing Committee needs to be set up in a similar way was is used for players who transgress- along with fines and suspensions… After a game players and coaches should be able to cite a ref who must then face a disciplinary board and action taken.

  • george60 - 2011-10-10 14:02

It seems its how far we can 'go under' there in down under?

      jacques - 2011-10-11 08:40

@George60, SA supporters comments are making them go much further under than what the Boks ever could.

  • Robbie - 2011-10-10 14:04

its a bit late for that now. dont you think!

  • John Douglas - 2011-10-10 14:05

    BOK SUPPORTERS ARE PATHETIC!!!

      colin.dovey - 2011-10-10 15:02

Prove it - and get a good NZ ref to judge your answer :-)

  • johan.joostesnr - 2011-10-10 14:07

I agree that Lawrence and quite a number of referees at the world cup were sub-standard. The assistant refs at sideline are also to blame since the ref can't always see what's happening on the other side of the ruck, and they must communicate with him all the time. I wonder what Paddy O'Brien, chief of the referees are saying about this?

  • Johan - 2011-10-10 14:09

    da bloody agent !

  • ShadowfaxUK - 2011-10-10 14:14

In the 2003 RWC Steve Walsh was banned for 3 days for inappropriate behavior towards the England rugby team. He was suspended for four months in 2005 during the Lions tour of New Zealand. In 2009 he turned up drunk at a referees meeting in Sydney. He has admitted to being biased against teams victimising certain players. Yet here he is in another RWC reffing quarter final matches ahead of respected and uncontroversial referees. So what does it take to get a referee banned?

  • Raeez - 2011-10-10 14:15

    Naaier!

  • G4E - 2011-10-10 14:17

This is just another example of "Servants" becoming the "bosses". Rugby is about the players. Without them, there would be no sponsors, spectators and other income-generating concepts. To keep things organised, the players appoint referees (to keep things 'fair'). Who knows what the top referees earn? They also appoint administrators to 'administer' the players' interests. It does not take long though, before these 'servants' call the shots: * They dictate to players, who get fined if they oppose the 'servants' in any way. * They cite players, but the system precludes 'servants' (such as referees) to be cited. * They red-card players, but the 'servants' have set up rules which ban any comment from players about the performance of said 'servants'. Full circle: the players have become the 'servants' of the money-making officials of the rugby empire! Time for the players to revolt and cut off the 'servants' from the money!

  • red - 2011-10-10 14:18

Bryce poor - yes but Fourie Du Preez - knock on on the line - ban him Jean de Villiers - forward pass - ban him Schalk i lost the ball on the line - ban him Pierre Spies - AWOL - ban him Danie Russouw -i dont know the rules of rugby - ban him Bryce did not lose the game for us - WE did - admit and move on.

      Stephan Fourie - 2011-10-10 14:20

finally someone who sees the light! i agree red i agree.

      MAXIMUS - 2011-10-10 14:23

So glad I read to the bottom of the comments, this should be the first comment after this article, actually all articles should be replaced by this comment, VIVA Red, VIVA.

      jacques - 2011-10-11 08:47

@Red, after 40 years of following rugby, i thought that i had missed something along the way and that the comments above could possibly hide some truth. Thankfully, i decided to scroll down - you are the TRUTH!!!

  • mcgrathr20 - 2011-10-10 14:22

All this reminds me of a scene in "The West Wing" where the future President of the US was passing the time watching a wrestling match. He asked: "Do these people have a vote?" I would repose the question about the people on this site with apparently so little to do that they can spend time attacking a man for doing his job. SA lost with too much brawn and too little brain. Get over it. Get a new coach, some new players and start again.

      rockster666 - 2011-10-10 23:25

one eyed bok supporters cry like little babies

      wstopford - 2011-10-10 23:49

many people from different countries, not only South Africans, seem to think perhaps this specific ref does not have credibility. What is brainless about debating this? And if you think all this is so irrelevant what are you doing on the site anyway, let alone wasting your time commenting? Clearly joined the ranks of attacking South Africans for saying what they think....

  • Jim - 2011-10-10 14:22

  • Realis - 2011-10-10 14:23

    What a cheap crook!

  • Johan Kruger - 2011-10-10 14:24

I agree. Austrlia complained against him after their loss against Ireland. He should have not be allowed to control any of Australias games after the complaint. Either he would bow the Aussies out of the game, or he can favour them. He favoured the Aussies to compensate for his mistakes in the Ireland game, at the cost of the Boks. That also makes sense, Bryce is a Kiwi, did he not helped NZ NOT to play aganst the Boks?? Just a question.

      jacques - 2011-10-11 08:53

Johan, be true to yourself - with a poor performance like that, the Boks (and the Aussies) would have lost against even Wales, let alone the AB's.

  • Perfume - 2011-10-10 14:24

Some of us hate being r4ped and we want revenge is that ok with you ?

  • Green Tea - 2011-10-10 14:38

Yes, lets ban all the bad refs. But then who will ref all the rugby games. The losing side will almost always have a legitimate gripe about the ref. Unfortunately it's the nature of the game due to the complexitiy of the laws and the game itself. Maybe we rather need to petition the IRB to simplify the rule book?

  • Kyle - 2011-10-10 14:42

      John Douglas - 2011-10-10 14:50

They are just humiliating themselves by doing this.

      wstopford - 2011-10-10 22:29

hi Hougie and Doug, why are SA supporters bad losers and why are we humiliating ourselves when we are asking exactly the same questions that the Aussies did in their previous match? And exactly the same questions that so many fans have asked of the same ref in so many other matches. Aussie won, clear and simple. Does this ref do a good job? It would seem that a lot of people (from around the world and not just South Africans) dont think so.

  • MFG - 2011-10-10 14:58

They should investigate his bank account- i am sure he was paid to slam SA

      Jim - 2011-10-10 15:47

Thats a South African trait, not a Kiwi one, remember Hansie, and Louis Lyt in 1995 the gold watch saga.

      John Douglas - 2011-10-10 17:44

      In your face MFG.
