Wellington - Australia wing James O'Connor has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup match against the United States on Friday because of a hamstring strain.
O'Connor underwent an MRI scan on Tuesday which showed a minor strain, and a team spokesperson said the Wallabies had decided to err on the side of caution and exclude him from consideration for the Pool C match.
The 21-year-old utility is expected to be fit for Australia's final first-round match against Russia on October 1.
Australia will announce its team on Wednesday. O'Connor's place is expected to be taken by winger Drew Mitchell, who if selected will start his first Test for the Wallabies since last November.
